of a pencil eraser. The next stages
are similar, but the nymphs become
larger. In the fourth stage, prior to
adulthood, they are vibrant red with
distinct patches of black and equally
distinct bright white spots. The adult,
which emerges in July, is a leafhopper
with 1-inch-long, grey wings with
black spots that, when open, reveal
a bright red underwing. SLFs live
through the winter only in egg mass-
es, which can be found from late fall
to early spring.
Beyond the insect itself, other evi-
dence of the SLF are oozing wounds
on bark that leave a greyish or black
trail. As SLF digests sap, it excretes a
substance known as honeydew that,
along with sap from these weeping
wounds, can attract bees and other
insects. There may be a buildup of
this sticky fluid on infested plants
and on the ground below. The honey-
dew and sap also provide a medium
for growth of fungi, such as sooty
mold, which can cover leaf surfaces
and stunt growth. Residents with
Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima)
on their property should pay special
attention, or even remove the tree(s),
as this is the SLF's preferred host.
What Can You Do?
If you see suspicious egg masses,
scrape them off, double bag them,
and throw them away. You can also
place the eggs into alcohol, bleach, or
hand sanitizer to kill them.
For an instructional video on
how to do this, visit: www.youtube.
com/watch?v=WoFp_MbDiE8.
Other measures include:
• Turn in a specimen of any life stage
to the New Jersey Department of
Agriculture's lab for verification.
• Email a photograph of any life
stage (including egg masses) to:
SLF-plantindustry@ag.nj.gov.
• If you can't take a specimen or
photograph, call the New Jersey
Spotted Lanternfly Hotline at
1-833-223-2840 (833-BAD-BUG-0)
and leave a message detailing your
sighting and contact information.
