Those decisions included the selection of a superb cast for "Better Things." Imrie shared with AV Club that her bond with Aldon was almost immediate, and the two "discovered so many things were the same in [their] lives," like how both she and Adlon had lived next door to their mothers. Imrie revealed in the same interview that an episode featuring a particularly tense mo- ment between mother and daughter was "born out of such love," and that "Phil being so crit- ical of her daughter becomes breathtakingly funny." Alligood was cast a bit later than the other two sisters, but that didn't stop the three from becom- ing sisters themselves on set. Alli- good's Frankie dealt with complex gender-identity issues throughout the first two seasons, and Alligood revealed to the AV Club that her character may not come to a tidy realization in Season 3, saying that the storyline is "like life. Not all the answers are spoon-fed to you. A lot of things you have to figure out for yourself." This season of "Better Things" showcases Adlon's talent for craft- ing a series. During the first season of the show, to step out from under the shadow of Louis C.K., Adlon has taken on even more responsi- bility. FX cut all ties with C.K. in late 2017 after multiple sexual miscon- duct allegations were leveled against him in a New York Times report. He not only co-created and co-wrote for "Better Things," but was behind more FX series, includ- ing "Baskets" and "Louie" through his production company, Pig Newton.
