"Winter is a great time to tackle papers," said Laura Richter, owner of Elm Grove organizational design business Pieces Into Place, LLC. Richter feels that having a messy home can add to one's stress level. "If you have a cluttered space, that's a manifestation of clutter happening in your mind," she said. Putting items back in an assigned place can reduce stress and relieve familial ten- sion, as things are less likely to get lost. Richter advises people break up organiza- tional tasks into manageable blocks of time. "One hour can be great," she added. Even straightening a countertop, or a kitchen utility drawer, can have a positive psychological effect, giving people the confi- dence to embark on a larger organizational project. "When done, you will feel lighter and freer," Delgado said. Striving to live a more minimalist lifestyle can also lead to increased well- being. Like Japanese decluttering expert Marie Kondo, whose hit Neflix series "Tidying Up with Marie Kondo" has inspired many to begin their organizational journey, Richter believes that eliminating items one no longer needs can be emotionally liberating. "Focus on the things you need right now. It's clearing the slate," she said.
