FEBRUARY 2013 HOMES PLUS Homes Plus returns with home ideas February means the return of Homes Plus, your source for many home improvement and real estate ideas. As I write this piece, the weather outside is bitter cold with temperatures hovering in the single digits and wind chills well below zero. While that's not conducive to outdoor activities around the home, it is an opportunity to take stock of what your indoor project needs are. This month's Homes Plus looks at ways to help the process along. Writer Jim Cryns speaks with local experts on how kitchen cabinets play a significant role in the function of a home, and how the front exterior door can make an impression not only on your home but with guests, as well. This is also the time of the year when homeowners start thinking about getting rid of the clutter and getting their home organized. Certified professional organizing expert Brendan McDaniel offers tips on how to make it happen. Are you interested in hiring a contractor? Writer Dave Fidlin recently attended a seminar with a quartet of panelists who are members of the Milwaukee chapter of the National Association Remodeling Industry. He reports on the process of selecting the right contractor for your next home project. Local horticulture expert Michael Timm returns with his column. This month, he discusses how winter impacts the condition of our plants and trees. Butler National columnist Jim Dulley returns, as well, with his expert advice. We hope you enjoy reading Homes Plus and find something worthwhile to help you with your project needs. Feel free to contact me at 262-513-2626 or email dbutler@conleynet.com with any suggestions or story ideas that you would like to see in this publication. Finally, Homes Plus thanks our advertisers. We appreciate your support and look forward to you being a part of this publication this year. – Dwayne Butler Editor IN BRIEF Arbor Day Foundation offering free blue spruce trees WAUKESHA – Anyone from Wisconsin who joins the Arbor Day Foundation in February will receive 10 free Colorado blue spruce trees to plant when the weather turns warm. The free trees are part of the nonprofit foundation's Trees for America campaign. "The blue-green hue and distinctive shape of Colorado blue spruce trees will help beautify Wisconsin for many years to come," said John Rosenow, founder and CEO of the Arbor Day Foundation. "The trees will also add to the proud heritage of Wisconsin's existing Tree City USA communities." The Tree City USA program has sup- ported community forestry throughout the country for more than 35 years. The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between March 1 and May 31, with enclosed planting instructions. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow, or they will be replaced free of charge. Members also receive a subscription to the foundation's bimonthly publication "Arbor Day," and "The Tree Book," which contains information about planting and care. To become a member of the foundation and receive the free trees, send a $10 contribution to Ten Free Colorado Blue Spruce Trees, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410, by Feb. 28, or visit www.arborday.org/february.
