The Brookfield Central High School wrestling team outlasted Brookfield East 39-36 last month in a Greater Metro Conference dual that had seven pins and concluded with three consecutive forfeits. With East holding a 15-12 lead, Central sophomore Julien Selby trailed in the second period of his 152pound match against East junior Zech Copeland. But a quick change in momentum turned into a matchaltering pin at 3:29 for Selby. "I was looking to what my coach said," Selby said. "He told me I needed a pin. I was just listening to his instructions. I fought through, trying to not let (Copeland) get too many points on me. When I saw the opportunity, I went for it and just stuck it." Central coach Christopher Demos never gave up on Selby, despite the sophomore being down the entire match. "On our team, I would say I have several kids who are really tough," Demos said. "Julien is one of those kids. You can never count him out." It wasn't the first time Selby had faced this type of adversity. "A lot his matches he starts out down, but the kid just has got a motor and he keeps going," Demos said. "I was optimistic that that match would have ended like that. I was a little surprised that he was able to pull out a Robert F. The 160-pound match went down to the wire when East sophomore Drew Hepperla won 7-4 over Central junior Brandon Fong 7-4. Tied 4-4 in the third, Hepperla turned Fong's shoulders to the mat for a threepoint near fall with less than 10 seconds to go. Central sophomore Dan Rodriguez, who was bumped up two weight classes, took a 9-2 decision at 170, scoring several near falls during the match. The victory gave Central a 21-18 lead with six matches remaining. Central extended its lead to 27-18 when senior Elliot Yanasak turned his opponent upside down for a dramatic pin in 1:07 at 182. East closed its deficit to 27-24 when senior John LeClaire pinned his opponent at 18 seconds during Robert F. Borkowski/Special to The Freeman Brookfield Central's Ben Olsen, left, is taken down by Brookfield East's Ben Lingeman at 126 pounds during a Greater Metro Conference dual this season. the 195 match. At 220, sophomore P.J. LeClaire followed his brother's victory with his own pin at 53 seconds, giving his team a 30-27 lead. "The LeClaire brothers were kind of a given," East coach John Veal said. "They're expected victories." East forfeited the next two matches to put Central over the top. Demos knew his team had secured the victory before the LeClaire brothers stepped onto the mat. "After 170, 182, when they both got wins, going into those last two matches (195 and 220 pounds) I knew we had it won," Demos said. "I would have liked those last two guys to compete a little better, but the LeClaire brothers are tough wrestlers." Senior Mike Egan (138) also earned a pin at 3:00 for Central.
