letteR FRom the eDitoR Last month, like many of you, I attended the annual PA Farm show. now, I'm a guy who grew up in suburban new York, where the closest thing we had to livestock was the opossum family that lived beneath our patio one summer. back then, a drive into the countryside was like a trip to an exotic land, and I remember staring wide-eyed out the car window at cows and horses. when I saw deer—oh my—you would have thought that I had just seen giraffes or zebras grazing near the shoulder of the new Jersey turnpike. the thing is—I never quite got over that wonder. today, while I live in the city, the country is minutes away, with all the deer, cows, horses, sheep, pigs and turkeys that a guy could want. And, with just a short walk down to the river, I can watch herons and egrets and ducks, and, if I'm lucky, even catch a beaver, mink, hawk or falcon. then, once a year, I have the privilege of attending the Farm show, a fabulous assemblage of agriculture packed inside a cavernous, funky-smelling art deco building off of cameron street. how weird. how wonderful. As regular readers of theburg know, I often write about "city." I discuss things like infrastructure and density and redevelopment, relating it all back to the island of urban life that is harrisburg. but the PA Farm show reminded me of something else I love about this area—the proximity and even overlap of city and country. so, I don't have to choose between walkability and a mountain hike or between craft beer fresh from the tank and organic eggs fresh off the farm. It's all right here. In this issue, as in all issues, we feature a smattering of what's right here—community stories, food, arts, culture and health, with an expanded section dedicated to African- American history and culture. we hope you enjoy our content this month. Like a good country breakfast—it's all local, and it's all fresh. laWRance BinDa Editor-in-Chief lbinda@theburgnews.com coveR aRt By: Rich hauck WWW.hauckinteRactive.com GeneRal anD letteRs 920 n. thIrd st., suIte 101 • hArrIsburg, PA 17102 www.theburgnews.com eDitoRial: 717.695.2576 aD sales: 717.991.1660 PubLIsher: J.
