According to a news release, no child younger than 12 will be allowed to visit in any inpatient care area at Children's Hospital. The measure, which went into effect Wednesday, does not include clinic appointments or emergency department visits. "To help prevent the spread of the influenza virus and other viral illnesses and to protect the health of our patients, families and staff, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin is implementing an annual temporary visitor restric- tion at both our Milwaukee and Fox Valley hospitals (as well as the Surgicenter)," said Mike Gutzeit, MD and chief medical officer at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin have followed suit implementing the same restric- tions at Community Memorial Hospital in Menomonee Falls as well as St. Joseph's Hospital in West Bend, Froedtert media rela- tions associate Gerry Steele said. Wheaton Franciscan, now known as Ascension, has not employed visitor restrictions at this time, an Ascension spokesman said. A ProHealth Care spokesman and an Aurora Health Care spokesman both said they also did not have any formal visitation restrictions during flu season. This marks the second year in a row that Children's Hospital of Wisconsin implemented visitor restriction, said Evan Solochek, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin external communication manag- er. "The logic is, younger kids don't wash their hands well and they're less likely to follow the protocols to prevent the spread of virus," Solochek said.
