FINALLY PUT A STOP TO CREDITOR HARASSMENT The new Director of the Rutherford County Visual Arts Center, Deborah Harmon, is instructor for the fi rst non-continuing class of the Rutherford County Visual Artist Guild 2019 year. Harmon will teach Basic Wire Wrapping with a cabochon on , Saturday, January 19. The class location is the Rutherford County Visual Arts Center (VAC), 160 N. Main Street, Rutherfordton. The cost for the class that is suitable for beginners of intermediate wire wrappers is $15 for Guild members and $25 for non-members, plus a $15 materials fee payable to the instructor at the beginning of the class. Register at the VAC or on the web at www.ArtattheVac. com. For information call 828- 288-5009. Harmon, who joined the Guild last year is a friendly and positive person who "loves her life". She lives in Rutherfordton with her husband three cats, twelve chickens, three peacocks and four peahens. She says that she always has enjoyed working with her hands and over the years has worked in several mediums. She has sewn, kitted, crocheted and quilted but after discovering stained glass in 1993, she "fell in love with glass". This fascination with glass resulted in her buying a small kiln and through trial and error she began working in fused glass making cabochons. "It really was trial and error in learning how to create with glass, "Harmon said. "I had researched the process but forgot that high temperatures turn glass to liquid so I almost burned the house down. Finally, I mastered fused glass and would up with several buckets of scrap glass that I couldn't bear to throw out!" From this scrap glass she began making cabochons, an opaque gemstone that has been polished but not faceted. She wanted to create jewelry with these and explored different ways from using glue to drilling holes into them to make necklaces. But after little success with any of these methods, she tried wire wrapping and settled on this method. She has been making wire wrap jewelry for more than 10 years and enjoys the creating new designs. Several pieces of her jewelry and other art are on display at the Visual Arts Center. "Students registering this class will learn the basics in one day, "Harmon added. "These basics are the essential building block for any wire jewelry artist. The artist can create both a beautiful and a study piece of art without using heat or glue and with a minimum of materials. And once the basic wire wrapping skills are learned, anyone can create a setting for a cabochon or even a sea shell. Each student in this class will go home with a fi nished pendant he or she has created!" For more information about the class or other classes scheduled at the Visual Arts Center, call the VAC at 828-288-5009.
