Post 2018 campaign sets record for volunteer hours MILWAUKEE — United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County raised $56 million and had the most volunteer hours during its 2018 community campaign since the nonprofit's inception in 1909. "We're proud to celebrate with everyone who contributed to our campaign in 2018," said Amy Lindner, president of United Way. "It's always the people behind the campaign that makes a difference, and this year was no exception." A total of 749 volunteer events were held this year, setting the record with 42,126 vol- unteer hours at an estimated value of $1,040,090, according to a press release. The annual campaign was chaired by Cristy Garcia-Thomas, Advocate Aurora Health; David W. Gay, EY; Donald W. Layden Jr., Baird Capital, Quarles & Brady LLP; and Mike Rowe, American Transmission Company. At the end-of-the-year closing celebration, United Way Chairman Cory Nettles announced the "Linda McFerrin Award for African American Nonprofit Leadership," at the end of this year's closing celebration in honor of McFerrin's impending retirement, according to the release. "My wife Michelle and I are so proud to establish this award in recognition of Linda's 42 years of leadership and service to United Way," Nettles said. "A nonprofit leader will be selected by United Way's Diversity Leadership Society and a grant will be made by United Way to the organiza- tion they represent." The 2018 winner will be announced on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, Jan. 15. United Way invests in over 220 programs and over 1120 partner agencies. Investments from United Way cover a four-county region including Milwaukee, Waukesha, Washington and Ozaukee counties.
