David Brinkley Television News Anchor Automatic, V8, leather, alloy wheels, 3rd row seating, local trade, one owner. 828-245-1626 565 Oak Street, Forest City ©Community First Media He became one of America's favorite television news reporters. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina on July 10, 1920, David McClure Brinkley contributed many memorable moments for American television viewers. He was very active in television from 1943 to 1998. He worked for both NBC and ABC. He passed away at age 82 in Houston, Texas. He was the youngest of five children born to William Graham Brinkley and Mary MacDonald Brinkley. He began writing for a local newspaper, the Wilmington Morning Star, while still attending New Hanover High School. He attended the university of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Emory University and Vanderbilt University, before entering service in the united States Army in 1941. Following his discharge in 1943, he moved to Washington, D. C. He was looking for a radio job at CBS News. Instead, he took a job at NBC News, became its White House correspondent and in time began appearing on television. As he emerged he was eventually paired with Chet Huntley and the main news program on NBC became the Huntley-Brinkley Report. This happened on October 29, 1956. It became the number one news program in America. Huntley was in New York and Brinkley in Washington. His dry wit became most popular. His short declarative sentences were his signature. The catch phrase of the Huntley-Brinkley Report became "Goodnight, Chet - Goodnight, David". He left NBC in 1981. Almost immediately, he was offered a job at ABC and in 1981 he began hosting "This Week with David Brinkley". The program revolutionized Sunday morning news programs. David Brinkley won ten Emmy Awards, three Peabody Awards and in 1992 President H. W. Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nations highest civilian honor. Bush called him the "elder statesman of broadcast journalism". 9,900 Check Out Our Inventory at www.SiskFord.com Monday-Friday 8am-6pm • Saturday 8am-3pm
