Barbara Dittrich in January. On top of major career changes, the Kleefisches recently moved to a new home they built in Concord, further west of their previ- ous home in the Town of Oconomowoc. Their daugh- ters, Violet, 12, and Ella, 15, also continue to spread their wings with Ella likely getting her driver's license in about six months. Finding a new path "When you run for politi- cal office, you never expect to lose," Kleefisch said of the November election to the Democratic candidates. Although she finds herself in what many in the political sphere consider a lame-duck period, Kleefisch is anything but unproductive. She continues to travel through the state, advocating for its residents. But the future weighs on her mind too — and the mort- gage that must be paid. She hopes to finalize her future career plans by mid- January, and the same for Joel, she said. "There are lots of good choices out there," she said. "I want to make sure it's the right decision for my family and me." What is likely to fuel Kleefisch's decision will be if the job will allow her to do "good work" and to continue to learn, which are two aspects she really valued about her job as lieutenant governor. Kleefisch said she has "an insatiable thirst for knowl- edge" and has never made any topic off limits, includ- ing liquid manure injections. "I feel that is my obliga- tion. I feel that I am a better steward because I try to strengthen my knowledge where it is weak," she said. As second in command of the state, Kleefisch knew that she might need to fill in for the governor, so she learned the ins and outs of the budg- et and state happenings. Reinventing the role Kleefisch said one of the things she is proudest of dur- ing her eight years at the Capitol is the role she was able to play advocating for the state. "I am most proud that we gave the taxpayers a value for their buck. We made the lieutenant governor a func- tional aspect of govern- ment," she said. Walker can be credited with giving the office of lieu- tenant governor more power, she said. "He saw the office as an asset and empowered it to be so," she said. However, not everything went according to plan. One of Kleefisch's great- est disappointments was her initiative to get Milwaukee Public School students an opportunity to learn job skills in the Wisconsin Dells. She figured that these stu- dents needed help to obtain a job where they could get their first work experience and develop employable skills. Kleefisch said she noticed that there were many jobs in the Dells being filled with workers from other countries on visas and she thought the state would be better served giving MPS students an opportunity to fill them. At the start of the program there was about 50 students involved, but at the end of the summer only one remained. She said a variety of cir- cumstances caused them to stop working in the Dells, whether it was family mat- ters or deciding that some- thing else was a better oppor- tunity. While that initiative may not have been successful, Kleefisch says she is thank- ful for also being able to work for Wisconsin on the interna- tional level by meeting with dignitaries on trade. "It's been a distinct and wonderful honor," she said. Advice The one word that Kleefisch highlighted as part of her advice for incoming Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes is "grace." She said he has not approached her about the transition yet, but she believes showing grace toward everyone is impor- tant as lieutenant governor. "That's something I've tried to live by every day," she said, adding it's "better to find commonality" than looking for thinks to dislike. When asked about the final bills created by the Wisconsin Legislature in an extraordinary session and signed into law by Walker, Kleefisch said the truth can be found if the legislation is read. "You'll realize that there is nothing terribly contro- versial," she said. In January, Kleefisch will speak during Kaylan Haywood's inauguration, a Democrat who was elected in November to the 16th Assembly District. She said she told him to always ask a lot of questions and never to be embarrassed that you don't know an answer or what an acronym stands for. While the future remains uncertain to some extent for Kleefisch, she is approaching the future as she does with every day, with "hustle in her bustle." "I want to continue to do good work and continue to be an advocate for the voiceless and to continue to be a representative of what I feel is the Wisconsin spirit." — Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch Kleefisch: Lieutenant governor undecided about her future continued from Page 1
