MPN is known as a chronic disease, Jemison said, because patient treatment can range from just being observed closely to others needing chemotherapy or blood drained. "If they start accelerating, they acceler- ate into an acute leukemia and a lot of them end up going into bone marrow trans- plants," Jemison said.
