Wildlife R e s o u r c e s Commission's Home From The Hunt™ campaign reminds waterfowl hunters to take basic safety precautions while hunting from a vessel. "A boating accident in cold weather can quickly lead to hypothermia," said Chet Clark, the Commission's eastern outreach manager. "It's imperative to dress appropriately, wearing wool or other synthetic materials, and always wear a personal fl oatation device. A small amount of precaution can mean the difference between life and death in the event of an accident." The Commission also recommends that hunters: • Be aware that small, fl at-bottom vessels are prone to capsizing and swamping. • Keep hunting dogs prone in the center of the boat. • Store equipment properly and keep it evenly distributed. • Never move about the boat with a loaded shotgun. • Don't overload the boat, especially with passengers. • Always let someone know your whereabouts and an approximate return time. • In the event of capsizing or swamping, stay with the boat and use it as a fl oatation device. The Commission has set dates, bag limits and applicable regulations for the 2018- 2019 waterfowl seasons, with tundra swan (by permit only), duck & geese hunting. OUTDOOR TRUTHS There's something about bow hunting in the dead of winter. It brings together the most diffi cult circumstances a hunter can face. Many times, the temperatures are in the teens, the wind can cut through the thickest clothes, and the snow can make a normally short walk to the stand, a long and treacherous trek. And then you must get within bow range, which is usually thirty to forty yards at the most. With all these great conditions, what's not to like? I like hunting this way. It be- comes, to me, a test. It is a test of my preparation, endurance, and ability. It's also good for me to know that only a few other nuts are in the woods with me. And after a recent gun season, it seems fi tting to return the quietness of a stick and string. In life there are also times that are more diffi cult than others. They are the seasons for some of the harshest circumstances life can offer. These are the seasons of sacrifi ce, suffering and sorrow. They make normal activities diffi cult and complicated. They take more focused concentration. It is the Christian winter. But it is in this winter that I am compelled to look for new life. You see, winter is the season of faith. The trees are without leaves and the ground is covered with the death of the past. Everything seems lifeless. But, it is under the surface of those leaves and that death, that we fi nd new life for the days ahead. We may not be able to see it, but it is there. Germinating, breaking free, and growing. The lack of exposure is not for its hinderance, but for its protection. In our winter times, we too are growing. God is using the hard things to teach us to trust him. We may not see Him, but if we will look under the surface, we will fi nd him at work, getting us ready for a new season of life. These hard things are not to hinder you, but to protect you, until it's time for you break through. Heritage will be really tough in the playoffs with athleticism, quickness, size and shooting ability. Defensively, I expect them to get even better, but R-S Central (5-2) played its best hoops of the season. Central continues to impress and perhaps even play better than expected. Elijah Carson (21 points), Tyion Watkins (21 points) and Jacob Knox (15 points) all came up big down the stretch. The fact that they do the little things right or that they don't give up, Central just keeps on fi nding ways to win early this season. Central lost to Mountain Heritage by 20-plus last December, but the Hilltoppers still managed to win 20- plus games a year ago. Central will face East Burke on the road on the 20th and go to Freedom on the 27th. East Rutherford East Rutherford (5-1) beat Greer and Highland Tech last week. So far, they have been fairly balanced with Christian Walker leading the way at 20 points and 11 boards per game. Jayden Waddell 16 ppg, Isaiah Lathan, Jordan Harris and Owen Chapman are all around 10 points per game. They have one more game this week before Christmas break as they hosted Greer Wednesday. They go to Chesnee for the Christmas Tourney on the 27th. Chase (2-3) The Trojans lost the only game it played this week, falling to a decent Cherryville team, 77-72. They have been competitive in all fi ve game so far this season and go to East Henderson Wednesday 12/19 before the Christmas break. Tyler Whiteside (26 ppg/10 boards) and Deandre McCoy (17 ppg/7 boards) lead the way for Chase. They will play Bessemer City in a Christmas Tourney on the 27th. Ladies Basketball R-S Central The Lady Hilltoppers (4-3) lost to one of the best 2A clubs in the state in Mountain Heritage by 3 on Friday. Central continues to get better with Jada Logan, Jada Wilkins and Maddie Gillie leading the way. Nkyia Lynch has been tough on the boards so far to help out. They go to East Burke on the 20th before playing the Freedom Christmas Tourney on the 27th. East Rutherford The Lady Cavs (5-1) lost to Greer, but easily handled Highland Tech in last week's games. Osha Makerson and Brooklyn Henderson led the way with 20 points per game and 13 respectively. Makerson has 10 assist per game as last year's conference MVP hasn't let up in her senior year. Chase The Lady Trojans (1-3) still have problems scoring, but lost by one earlier this season. It maybe another tough year, but they aren't playing bad defensively so far by holding teams to 54 points a game at this juncture.
