Newspapers from around the state have an opportunity host college interns during the summer of 2019. The Hoosier State Press Association Foundation will offer nine Eugene S. Pulliam Internships with students earning $350 per week for up to 10 weeks of employment. Dozens of students and papers apply each year. The program provides newsrooms with aspiring journal- ists who are talented and enthusi- astic. It provides the college students with an opportunity for real-world experience with reporting, photography, multime- dia and more. "I don't think I could have asked for a better internship. It was great," said Mary Freda, a senior at Ball State University who worked at the The Star Press in Muncie last summer. Freda said she appreciated the opportunity to do a variety of things in the newsroom and would advise other interns to make the most of their time and resources at a paper. "People value hard work. I knew if I put in the extra time I would get a product I was happy with and my editor would be really happy with," Freda said. Last summer, Tom French from Indiana University served as a mentor for the interns offering coaching and feedback in addition to the students' editors. Juli Metzger will take on that role in 2019. Metzger, an instructor at Ball State, previously served as the Executive Editor for Digital at the Indianapolis Star. For Freda, her favorite story from the summer was about a pit bull mix with quirks named Thunder who had been at an animal shelter for 300 days. "Somebody saw it in the paper and went and got him right away," she said. Publisher The Indiana Volume 83, Issue 12 • December 2018 Published on second Thursday monthly Jan. 15 deadline to request summer 2019 Pulliam newsroom interns New round of Value of Newspaper promos available Tell readers about the indispen- sible role your publication plays in their lives and community. That was the goal of the Value of Newspapers promotional campaign launched in October. This month, a second round of ads is available to HSPA member publications. The campaign, designed by Indianapolis ad agency Well Done Marketing, aims to provide newspapers with tools to better tell their own stories to readers, said Steve Key, HSPA executive director and general counsel. The marketing effort was funded by the HSPA Foundation and features a variety of customiz- able print and web ads including audio/radio and video spots that can be used on a paper's web page and on social media. The promotional material offers marketing tools to newspapers that might not otherwise have the resources to promote themselves to their readership. "We are all fortunate to be members of an organization that is working to help us during these challenging times," said Foundation Board President B.J.Riley who serves as publisher for the Decatur Daily Democrat and the Post and Mail in Columbia City. The print and video promos feature scenes from small and medium-sized towns with universal themes and subjects iconically associated with Indiana — like basketball. The promos are a resource to help newspapers maintain and gain readership, said Pete Van Baleen, general manager of Fort Wayne Newspapers. "We've got to expand and let people know that what truly matters in their local community is happen- ing in the newspaper," he said. SOPHOMORE STUNS IN OVERTIME Your daughter scored a personal best. Your principal is catching her breath. The whole town is headed to the finals. Your stories are our stories. Be in on all the action. The latest round of Value of Newspapers promos features customizable print ads, videos showcasing small and medium-sized towns and more. "People value hard work."
