Model 8365 GERMANTOWN — "As the falling leaves quickly turn to falling snow, it's important that your roof is prepared for the winter months ahead," said Scott Cline, owner of J&B Con- struction. One of the first tasks on your roof maintenance checklist should be to clean your gutters. "Leaves, branches, and other debris have a tenden- cy to accumulate in your rain gutters, especially in autumn, which can prevent water from draining proper- ly during rainstorms," Cline said. When temperatures drop to 32 degrees or below, the excess water in the gutters will freeze and the added weight could cause the gut- ters to sag or even break off. "To be proactive, consider trimming the trees in your yard, especially if there are any limbs that extend over your gutters and roof," he said. Anticipate issues by observing the roof before the first snowfall from the ground level. "Specifically, you'll want to keep an eye out for any missing shingles and exam- ine the state of the flashing surrounding the chimney and the eaves," Cline said. "Carefully note any damage you suspect was the result of strong storms." Your attic may not be the first space that comes to mind when determining whether or not your roof is equipped to handle another winter, but it can reveal serious problems, such as poor insulation that can lead to ice dams. "Not to mention improper attic insulation can nega- tively impact your home's energy efficiency, conse- quently raising your energy bills," Cline said. Make sure your attic has the appropriate amount of insulation, but at the same time does not block soffits, vents or overhangs. "Additionally, be sure to remove any pieces of waste from the ridge vents," Cline said. "While cleaning, look for any cues that suggest rodents may have tampered with the screens that cover your attic vents." Another concern is evi- dence of water or moisture in the attic. Leaks are dan- gerous, as they can compro- mise the integrity of the roof. "If you notice water is leaking from your roof and into the attic, be sure to con- tact a roofing professional immediately to prevent any further damage,"Cline said. Builder provides roof maintenance checklist (StatePoint) — Planning for the holiday season? Whether you're a guest or a host, there are easy ways to ensure that everyone enjoys their time with family and friends. Check out these tips for a joyful holiday season: A helping hand Holiday hosts are often bogged down by tasks and chores. Make yourself use- ful. Keep areas you are using clean and offer to help around the house. If you're the host, don't be shy about delegating simple tasks to your guests. Most guests will appreciate the opportunity to make their stay less stressful on you. Comfort is key When extended family or friends get together for the holidays, ensure everyone has a comfortable place to sleep. A must-have for both travelers and hosts is a high-quality air mattress that's compact and easy to inflate, and these days, some brands have elevated their offerings to luxury stan- dards, helping to create a more comfortable night's rest. For example, Intex offers a range of comfortable airbeds with impressive fea- tures, such as a headboard, raised bed height (up to 24 inches), built-in USB charg- ers, a plush dual air pillow- top system, various sizes and supports to choose from and more. Their airbeds provide enough comfort and luxury that guests may even consider extending their stay. Worried about the time and energy of set-up? With internal electric air pumps, these high-quality, durable airbeds take just minutes to inflate and deflate, saving families both time and ener- gy. That means more time spent enjoying each other's company and making mem- ories. And they're super easy to stock up on, avail- able online or in-store at most major big-box retail- ers. Snack time Beyond the main holiday meal, there are breakfasts, snacks and other meals to consider. Guests and hosts should work together on this one to ensure that there are foods and beverages on hand that meet everyone's dietary needs and restric- tions. Hosts should ask their guests in advance if there are any allergies, sensitivi- ties or particular foods to avoid. Children can be particu- lar about food, so knowing if there are any favorites to stock the fridge and pantry with can also be helpful. As a guest, consider pack- ing your own snacks to take with you. You can also help your hosts by letting them know of any issues in advance: from peanut aller- gies to medical restrictions. Holiday tips for houseguests and hosts StatePoint When having lots of guests over for the holidays, you might want to make sure you have a comfortable air mattress.
