Dakota Ave., has been decommissioned and the church is no longer in use. The estimated cost of the St. John Kanty building repairs, including a new boiler and asbestos removal, would exceed $250,000, a conservative estimate, said Rev. Michael Ignaszak, long- time pastor of St. John Paul II Parish, of which St. John Kanty Church is a part. A recent pipe repair cost the church $20,000. "We tried to keep the parish (building) open as long as finan- cially feasible, but the boiler forced our hand," Ignaszak said. The church has been sold. Ignaszak declined to name the buyer, but said the transaction is expected to close by early 2019. St. John Kanty Parish was founded in the early 20th century. The church on Dakota Avenue was built in 1955. In 2011, the congregation merged with nearby St. Helen and St. Alexander congregations to form Blessed (now St.) John Paul II Parish, with offices at 3307 S. 10th St. The three individual church buildings continued to function, and the St. Helen and St. Alexander buildings are still in use. "The merger of the parish went remarkably well, because the people wanted and asked for it," said Ignaszak. St. John Kanty School will con- solidate with Holy Wisdom Academy to form St. John Paul II School, with enrollment begin- ning next fall. Holy Wisdom repre- sents a previous consolidation of the former St. Alexander and St. Helen elementary schools. "We're in the process of the integration right now," Ignaszak said. "We're going to build the best school we can and increase the quality of education." A decommissioning Mass for St. John Kanty, at which auxiliary bishop James T.
