Aldermen on Tuesday voted, 10-5, in favor of affirming Mayor Tom Barrett's appointment of for- mer Milwaukee firefighter Everett Cocroft to the civilian-led Fire and Police Commission, which has been functioning with six members following a vacancy early this year. Cocroft's appointment to the commission has drawn scrutiny in recent months, following publi- cized reports of emails he sent nearly two and a half years ago in opposition to raising property taxes to fund additional police officers. At Tuesday's meeting, alder- men went into a Committee of the Whole and interviewed Cocroft before render- ing the vote to name him to the post. During the question-and- answer ses- sion, Cocroft said he stood by the remarks in his 2016 emails, which includ- ed a passage that stated, "Police officers are reactionary, not proac- tive, the only thing they guard is their wallets, pension and bene- fits." But Cocroft, who served on the Milwaukee Fire Department for 32 years and remains a city resi- dent, this week also adamantly stated the comments, made in the heat of concerns about possible increased property taxes, are being blown out of proportion. "You guys are making it into a way bigger thing than it is," Cocroft said. "I'm anti-bad cop. I'm anti-bad parent. I'm anti-bad people." Speaking to his philosophy of serving on the FPC, Cocroft said, "When the facts come forward, I'm going to do the right thing." Cocroft also used the interview Milwaukee aldermen appoint former firefighter to Fire, Police Commission See COUNCIL on Page 15 Cocroft stands by email that says police guard 'their wallets, pension and benefits' Local news at your fingertips Visit www.gmtoday.com Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/MilwaukeePost Cocroft
