By BRIANNA STUBLER Conley News Service WEST BEND — The exhibit "Crossing the Line: The Milwaukee Fair Housing Marches of 1967-1968" is on display through Tuesday at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee at Washington County, and will highlight a guest activist. The display is open to the public, and is a representation of the prejudice and actions that led to the segregation of Milwaukee. It also displays a history of fair housing move- ments and school desegregation in the 1960s. Peggy Rozga, a professor, civil rights activist, poet and playwright, said the exhib- it has been in popular demand, which she attributes to both the past and the future. "I think that there is a lot of attention on racial issues these days for a number of rea- sons," she said. The discussions about race have encouraged ensuing conversations, she said, as people recognized the 50th anniversary of the marches throughout 2017. "Last year was the 50th anniversary of the housing marches, so Milwaukee had more than 200 commemorative events over the course of last year, so that got people talking and accounts for a lot of interest," Rozga said. Rozga offers a unique perspective on the marches and how the exhibit represents the 1960s because she herself was involved in them. "I was invited to speak because I was part of the marches and part of the committee that organized the commemorative events," Rozga said. "I was one of the marchers for Milwaukee open housing, and part of the Milwaukee NAACP council. I worked on the voter registration project in the South and saw voter suppression in 1965 and it changed my life. When I came back to Milwaukee I thought I would be a hypocrite if I stood up to racism in the South but not in the North in my own hometown, so I got involved," she said. Scott Silet, senior academic librarian at UWM at Washington County, said the reac- tion to the exhibit has been great, and Rozga brings a wealth of information because of her involvement.
