Not only would it be interesting to see fans all dressed up in their Hal- loween costumes, or sporting holiday-themed signs, it might also stir up some of the superstitions that have followed baseball and other sports throughout their histories. Baseball is a sport full of superstition. Obviously gone now is what once was the Curse of the Bambino that supposedly plagued the Boston Red Sox after they traded Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees pri- or to the 1920 season. The Yankees went on to win numerous World Series titles, but the Red Sox never overcame "The Curse" until 2004. always wore his North Carolina shorts under his Bulls uniform. He felt it brought him good luck. Former major league pitcher Turk Wendell would not step on the baseline, opting to leap over it. He brushed his teeth and chewed licorice between innings, feeling it brought him good luck. Baseball Hall-of-Famer Wade Boggs ate chicken before every game and performed other acts in the name of superstition. A number of players have shaved their beards and/or mustaches in between innings in hopes of changing their luck. Games 5 through 7 of the World Series will take place this week, if necessary. Perhaps new supersti- tions will begin. The Chicago Cubs, meanwhile, waited until 2016 for the Curse of the Billy Goat to end. In 1945, the owner of the Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago was asked to leave Wrigley Field prior to Game 4 of the World Series, and take his smelly pet goat with him. He is said to have angrily exclaimed, "Them Cubs, they ain't gonna win no more." The Cubs were up two games to one on the Detroit Tigers, but lost that series in seven games. In 2003, the Cubs appeared to be headed to the World Series. They were ahead of the Florida Marlins by a score of 3-0 in Game 6 of the NLCS; just five outs away from victory, Then, Cubs left fielder Moises Alou was out-dueled for a foul ball by fan Steve Bart- man. An eight-run rally followed for the Marlins, who tied the series. The Marlins also won Game 7 and eventually the World Series. Despite the 2016 title, the Cubs blew it again this year. They led the NL Central much of the season, only to let the Milwaukee Brewers tie them on the last day of the season, then beat them in a tie-breaker for the division. The Cubs fell in the Wild Card game to the Colorado Rockies. The sports world has always been full of supersti- tious athletes.
