4 LIVE IT UP! FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2018 SANTA CRUZ SENTINEL Live It Up! W elcome to the fall edition of our quarterly magazine "LIVE IT UP." This one is always my personal fa- vorite each year as we focus on Non- profits, and the volunteers that spend countless hours behind the scenes to assist in their mission. Nonprofits are a huge part of what makes Santa Cruz County so special and our local Volunteer Center recognizes some of these fine folks each year. This year they celebrated with the 12th annual "Be the Difference Awards" where 50 nominees, and 6 winners were recognized. An inspiring event where we learned how everyday volunteers lift up our community by investing their time, talent, and resources to improve our collective quality of life. In this edition, Tara Fatemi Walker focuses on two of this year's nomi- nees: the committee for the Diver- sity Center of Santa Cruz's 60Plus Senior Program (named one of the 6 winners) and youth advocacy and leadership program Jovenes SANOS. Each year, the award gala attracts nearly 350 individuals, community leaders, business representatives and local trailblazers for good. Be sure to get this on your calendar for next October! Interested in volunteering but don't where to start? In this issue, Walker also showcases the nonprof- it Environteers, which provides—at Environteers.org—an easy way to learn about volunteer opportunities and events from local environmen- tal organizations; and the Volunteer Referral/Match program at the Volunteer Center, which works with more than 300 community pro- grams countywide. Finally, though we still make sure that active seniors are an important part of this publication, we realized that healthy living is for all adults, so we are broadening the focus to encompass all adults in Santa Cruz County, and not just the 55+ crowd.
