At its most recent regular meeting, the County Board, on a 17-1 vote, took the first step for- ward in the overture by authoriz- ing a study for possible revenue- generating uses for the Mitchell Park Greenhouses, 524 S. Layton Blvd. The study, consummated by way of a resolution, directs staffers in the county's Parks, Recreation and Culture depart- ment to look into the feasibility of growing and producing industrial hemp, hemp seeds and cannabi- noid oil. The proposal also calls for the possible creation of an edu- cation resource center. Supervisor Sylvia Ortiz-Velez, who represents the near South Side of Milwaukee, chairs the Committee on Parks, Energy a n d Environment. The group in e a r l y S e p t e m b e r vetted the pro- posal before forwarding it on to the full County Board on Sept. 20 with a favor- able recommendation. "This resolution is about more than just growing hemp," Ortiz- Velez said. "I think this is an opportunity to bring in additional revenue without raising taxes." Ortiz-Velez said she also is favoring the study because she believes hemp, when used for medicinal purposes, could be an alternative — particularly at a time when statistics reveal over- doses and deaths related to opi- oids and heroin remain high. The proposal, at least at this early study phase, received wide- spread support throughout the County Board during the recent debate. The county can pursue the effort after state lawmakers this past session legalized industrial hemp.
