Staff Writer The Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper is the nation's fourth old- est surviving African-American news- paper in the country. Indiana Minority Business Magazine is the state's leading publication that focuses on business, lifestyle and diversity. Responsibilities: Staff Writer is responsible for creating writing news and feature articles, news briefs, conducting interviews, building new ideas and sharing content and promotion on social media. Report and write content as assigned for the Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper, Indiana Minority Business Magazine and Recorder Media Group. • Work with newsroom manage- ment to determine a story's empha- sis, length and format, and organize material accordingly. • Arrange, conduct and transcribe interviews with sources. • Research and analyze back- ground information prior to conduct- ing interviews. • Check reference materials, such as books, news files or public records, to obtain relevant facts. • Investigate breaking news developments and create appropri- ate content for print and/or digital audiences. • Revise work as needed to meet editorial approval or to fit time or space requirements. • Receive assignments or evalu- ate leads or tips to develop story ideas. • Discuss issues with editors to establish priorities or positions. • Review copy and correct grammar and punctuation errors in content, following prescribed editorial style and formatting guidelines. • Communicate with copy editor as needed to improve writing. • Coordinate with production staff on locating art for stories. • Work with additional news- room staff to maintain social media accounts and websites. • Other duties as assigned. Education and Qualifications: BA or BS in public relations, mass communication, journalism or related field. Ability to be proactive and assertive in efforts to secure interviews and information for con- tent, experience writing news briefs, short- and long-form news stories and features. Excellent communica- tion skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize, work well under pressure, meet deadlines and follow projects through to completion in a very fast-paced environment. News Reporter The Daily Journal, an award- winning daily newspaper located just south of Indianapolis, is looking for full– and part–time news reporters to fill positions available immediately in our newsroom. One or two years of experience at a newspaper is preferred, but recent journalism graduates with strong clips are encouraged to apply. Reporters cover topics including news, business and government, as well as complete enterprise and feature stories. Candidates must be versatile, be able to analyze infor- mation and write well, cover beats, work well under deadline and take complicated issues and make the reader understand them. Employee Sought ASNE, APME approve merger plan to become News Leaders Association At this pivotal moment for journalism and freedom of the press, two of the most significant organizations in journalism have voted to merge and become one voice for the industry. The formation of the News Leaders Association, combining the American Society of News Editors and Associated Press Media Editors, was approved by the two groups' members during their September joint News Leadership Conference in Austin. ASNE and APME will continue to work jointly on major projects during the coming year as legal steps toward the merger are completed. NLA is expected to be in place by the 2019 News Leadership Confer- ence Sept. 9-10 in New Orleans. In this extraordinary time of upheaval across the news industry, as well as forces outside it, leaders and members of ASNE and APME believe that now is the time for journalism leaders to come together to make great impact. "These are challenging times for our business and our country," said Nancy Barnes, incoming president of ASNE for 2018-19.
