MILWAUKEE COUNTY'S WEEKLY NEWSPAPER SEPTEMBER 21, 2018 By CATHERINE JOZWIK Special to the Post ST. FRANCIS — The city will hold a 2 p.m. dedication Sept. 29 at Lake Protestant Cemetery to honor two Civil War veterans, William Thompson and William Beal, with special engraved grave- stones. The ceremony will be conduct- ed by the Sons of Union Veterans, wearing Civil War costumes, and will feature a bugler and a wreath ceremony. Randy Borland, a descendant of Thompson, will dis- cuss his ancestor's Civil War serv- ice. Thompson served in the war as a private with Company K of the 24th Wisconsin Infantry; Beal, with the Illinois 88th Infantry Company I. St. Francis Historical Society President Anna Passante said the organization, which partnered with the city to restore Lake Protestant Cemetery, worked extensively with retired Veterans Administration employ- ee Tom Ludtka. "He helped with the red tape," she said. Ludtka, along with area teacher Marge Berres, found more than 1,000 hidden graves of Civil War veterans in Forest Home Cemetery using a ground-pene- trating radar technology service. In accordance with a VA program, 400 engraved headstones were placed on the graves of the veter- ans. The Historical Society presi- dent said Ludtka contacted her several years ago inquiring about locating Civil War graves in Lake Ceremony to honor two Civil War-era veterans See CIVIL WAR on Page 15 VA program results in engraved headstones Local news at your fingertips Visit www.gmtoday.com Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/MilwaukeePost Photo courtesy of Anna Passante Civil War veteran William Thompson's grave, which will be dedicated Sept. 29 at Lake Protestant Cemetery in St. Francis. 414-418-3667 (DOOR) (DOOR) $ 299 A $349 Value!
