The Lewis Award was presented to Jo James, coordinator of technology-enhanced learning. That award is named for Dr. Willard L. Lewis, the college's former president, who placed a great emphasis on the importance staff plays in Isothermal's mission to "improve life through learning." James has been a devoted employee of Isothermal Community College since 2000. She was described by co-workers as one who has an innate desire and ability to lead, mentor, and consistently seek new and innovative learning opportunities. "Many people across campus seek her advice, input, and involvement on various matters," said Stephen Matheny, vice president of Administrative Services, as he presented the Lewis Awardward. "The work she produces is always exceptional, practical, and works toward fostering and promoting the learning college concept. As a result of her prior experience serving the college as a Business Sciences instructor for 14 years, she is able to view the institution, it"s employees, and most importantly, its students from multiple perspectives. Pell Tanner was on hand to present the Tanner Awards with VP Thad Harrill while the Golden Apples were given by Dr. Dolly Horton, Isothermal's vice president of Academic and Student Services. The Golden Apple Award Committee made the selections on criteria including the exhibition of a commitment to excellence; the nurturing of a climate of integrity, care, and respect for individuals; demonstration of initiative to resolve problems or improve processes that benefit the college; demonstration of a cooperative spirit and willingness to help others that exceeds job expectations; and serving as an inspiration to others. The knowledge that Tim has about his job is outstanding; however, if he doesn't know how to fix a problem (which doesn't happen often) he's going to find someone who can, to insure it is done correctly. Sometimes it takes a little more research to figure out the solution to a problem here on campus and Tim does his research because he doesn't just rely on his knowledge, he relies on all aspects of what is required to do the job well because he takes pride in his work and he takes the time to find a solution. Not just any solution, but the correct one. Ask anyone who is the "Go to Person" for help, and Tim Beam is your guy. By inspiring others by showing them what hard work and dedication looks like embodies the true essence of the Golden Apple Award. Leeann Cline-Burris • Continuing Education Registrar Leeann Cline-Burris • Continuing Education Registrar You can train an employee to do a particular job, but you cannot train someone to have integrity, resiliency, and self-confidence and strong work ethics. Leeann Cline-Burris excuse all these and more within the Continuing Education Department, TALC, and Isothermal. Leeann is always looking for ways to accomplish goals more efficiently and completes these tasks with cutting-edge technology and innovative ideas and is always patient and willing to work with us "older" folk, who need a little help to understand the dynamic process. A definition of the word "pilot" is to lead or guide. In the registrar for Continuing Education, Leeann pilots our department through mounds of course files, meticulously making sure all our class paperwork is correct so we are in accordance in all areas and it is all thanks to Leeann, who truly exemplifies the essence of a Golden Apple award winner. Barbara Callahan • Adult High Schools Program Secretary Barbara Callahan • Adult High Schools Program Secretary Barbara demonstrates an excellent work ethic. She is reliable, punctual, and proactive. Her excellent organization skills keep us on track throughout the year and is exceptionally thoughtful of others as she ensures the members of our department take time to celebrate one another and are there to offer support in times of need. Barbara is a hard worker, who is passionately loyal to the College and Career Readiness department and the college. Barbara not only demonstrates a cooperative and supportive spirit within the College and Career Readiness department but also the college as a whole. Whenever possible she lends her support to other departments and rallies her colleagues to do the same; organizing our efforts to participate in school activities, walks, drives, and other events. Because Barbara exhibits incredible caring and kindness, inspiring others to do the same with a genuine desire at helping all that come across her path, she is a most worthy recipient of this year's Golden Apple Award. Lisa Courtney • Success Coach Advisor and Student Activities Coordinator Lisa Courtney • Success Coach Advisor and Student Activities Coordinator Lisa Courtney strives for excellence by serving students with a servant's heart. She is talented at organizing students to volunteer for various outreach, tour, and recruitment opportunities to which the students generously give their time. She is not discouraged by students with diverse backgrounds, but rather treats all students with the same integrity and respect that all humans deserve. Lisa began offering Mental Health First Aid Training on a regular basis to the College and to the greater community. The training not only helps individuals experiencing an imminent crisis, but it also helps instructors, staff, and community members to feel better equipped and empowered to deliver help if a crisis presents itself. At the conclusion of one Lisa's trainings, a student participant disclosed that he is planning to limit his substance use as he realized from the training it may be contributing to his depression. This kind of realization is amazing and is only one of many types of positive contributions Lisa has made and well deserved of the Golden Apple award. Greg Dobbins • Maintenance Technician Greg Dobbins • Maintenance Technician Greg Dobbins nurtures a climate of integrity, care, and respect for individuals as he is always in good spirits and willing to help anyone; albeit, a co-worker, faculty, staff, or student. Greg takes initiative to resolve problems with his many years of service at Isothermal and has the reputation of being the "go-to" person if you want the job done with professionalism, dedication, and with a smile. Ask Greg for help and he will drop what he is currently doing to help whomever is in need because he puts others first before himself. Because of Greg's selfless demeanor, he is an inspiration to us all for he is committed to his job, the college, but more importantly the people he works with, which makes Greg a true recipient of the Golden Apple award. Eleven Isothermal Community College staff and faculty members were recognized recently for making outstanding contributions to the institution's learning environment. The Golden Apple Awards, given since 2006, were developed by Isothermal's Learning Strategies Taskforce as a way to recognize college employees who "dedicate their time and talents to create a college environment where learning can flourish." The Golden Apple winners were Tim Beam, Leeann Cline-Burris, Barbara Callahan, Lisa Courtney, Greg Dobbins, Sarah Kilgo, Kelly Lovelace, Corey Lowery, Chuck MaGee, Kaitlin Mitchell and Dee Spurlin. In addition to the Golden Apples, the annual Tanner Awards for Excellence and the Willard L. Lewis Staff Award were given. The Tanner Awards were presented to Tim Beam and Sarah Kilgo. The Tanner family has been involved with Isothermal since the college's beginning. S.B. Tanner, Sr., was one of the early supporters of the effort to create the college. His son, the late Jimmy Tanner, was named to Isothermal's first Board of Trustees in 1964. He continued to serve as a trustee until 2007, distinguishing himself as the longest serving member in the history of that body. Some brief comments from the selection committee about why each recipient was chosen for the Golden Apple Awards. Sarah Kilgo Sarah Kilgo Information Systems Technology Instructor Information Systems Technology Instructor Two years ago, Sarah learned there was an urgent need for a high school liaison to assist in registering high school students for ICC classes through the state's Career and College Promise (CCP) initiative. She was not asked to take on this responsibility, she volunteered for it because she knew that we would lose students if someone did not step up. In the past two years Sarah has taken on extra responsibilities as Team Leader for the Interim CCP Team. She has acted as CCP liaison between Isothermal Community College and high school representatives. In addition to assisting RS Central and Chase High school students register for ICC courses, she was instrumental in CCP policy and procedure development for the college and Rutherford County Schools. Sarah has also been instrumental in coordinating the TALC processes up until the 2017-18 academic year. She participates on taskforces as needed and she has been a McNair Mentor for high school students for several years. There is not enough time to tell you all the extra duties Sarah willingly accepts daily because her integrity and passion for students is paramount which makes her a model for what the Golden Apple award exemplifies.
