They look at the start of a new year as a chance to wipe the slate clean of all those bad habits they've indulged in over the last year. This goes along with the many, many holiday treats and other goodies they've gobbled up in the last few months. We at The O-Town Scene can sympathize. That's why we've included some of our own ways to help you improve your 2013. If you're looking for a new hairstyle or hair salon to start the year off right, check out our story on Oneonta's hair-raising array of beauty salons and barbers on Pages 1214. Warning: Please expect at least a few more hair-related puns to accompany this edition. Here's one more: It seems like the downtown area is a cut above the rest when it comes to cutting and styling your coif. Oneonta has about as many, if not more, hair salons and barbers than pizza shops. That's saying something. From more high-end salons that offer nail glazing, hair frosting and prom night teasing to the simple barber shop that provide a haircut and a shave, Oneonta has it all and more. Prefer to be serenaded while you pop in for a quick cut? Try the Crystal Palace Barbershop on Dietz Street, owned and operated by Horseshoe Lounge Playboys members Randy Miritello. Want to add a little trim to your trim? Mane Street Cutters on Main Street can add hair extensions, feathers and tinsel to your do. Beyond hair, if you want to look forward for your fashion options, read Laygirl Fashion columnist Emily Popek's resolutions for 2013 on Page 5. Like many, she wants to spruce up her style and save money along the way. For enhancing your calm in the new year, peruse Yoga Life by Ashok Malhotra on Page 8. He offers ways to meditate and contemplate a state of peace and understanding. New Music Notes writer Mark Boshnack gives his take on up-and-coming Danish postpop-punk duo Reptile Youth on Page 5 for those looking to expand their musical minds. And for all of those "Game of Thrones" fans out there — count me among them — looking to sample a new taste of Westeros in 2013 while watching Season Three in March, read on Page 17 about Iron Throne Blonde Ale from Cooperstown's Brewery Ommegang. It's the first in a series of "Thrones" beers from Ommegang as part of an official partnership with HBO. While blonde King Joffrey Baratheon sits upon the Iron Throne in Kings Landing, a blonde ale seems fitting for sipping. As for me, as in most years, I'm determined to get more active. As I spend many hours before this very screen typing and editing and designing away, I look for ways to boost my fitness options. For the time being, I've taken to sweating it out with Wii dance video games. The newest edition to my collection is "Just Dance 4," but I'm also partial to "Zumba Fitness 2." I love getting to dance and workout by making a fool of myself alone during those random moments I have during the early afternoon while everyone else is working or schooling. There. I said it, and I meant it. Let's hope it continues. What are some of your resolutions for 2013? We would love to hear about them on our Facebook page or website at www. otownscene.com. And, of course, resolve to read The O-Town Scene every month and keep sending us your upcoming events to include in our publication at arts@thedailystar.com, on Facebook or our website. For this month's coming events and calendar, see Pages 18 and 19. Here's to a great 2013! Adrienne Wise is looking forward to the new "Game of Thrones" season because she secretly wishes she had a direwolf, knows winter is coming and always pays her debts. She is the editor of The O-Town Scene and associate managing editor of The Daily Star. Reach her at awise@ thedailystar.com.
