Aldermen on Wednesday voted unanimously in favor of c o n f i r m i n g Mayor Tom Barrett's pick of Jeanette Kowalik as commissioner of the Milwaukee Health Department. Kowalik, a Milwaukee native, has been working in Washington, D.C., in a variety of capacities in recent years, including a role as associate director of women's and infant health at the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs. She is succeeding Patricia McManus, who was picked to lead the MHD on an interim basis in February. McManus was brought into the department after the city's last permanent commissioner, Bevan Baker, resigned at the beginning of the year as allegations swirled about the MHD not protecting children from the ill effects of lead in drinking water. At the Common Council meet- ing, aldermen spent little time dis- cussing Barrett's appointment to the position. "In my meetings with her, I was very impressed with the things she had to say," Alderman Bob Donovan said. "Dr. Kowalik has a great deal of work ahead of her. She's going to have to come in landing on her feet." In advance of Wednesday's confirmation, Kowalik went before the council's Public Safety and Health Committee on Tuesday to share her views on the position and why she threw her hat into the ring. More than 74,000 health professionals with hypertension were tracked for 30 years. The researchers found a 20% lower risk of heart attack or stroke among those who reported eating 2 or more servings a week compared to those who rarely ate yogurt. Yogurt- eaters who also followed the DASH diet closely saw the greatest reduction in risk. Researchers suggest that the probiotic bacteria and other compounds in fermented dairy may be responsible for the beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system.
