"Lake Nacimiento is a manmade lake, cre- ated as a reservoir to support farming," said Bessemer. "at it became a recreation area is a welcome side benefit. Still, boaters complain when the water level drops for irrigation." South of King City, Lake San Antonio, formed by San Antonio Dam on the San Antonio River, was created to provide ground water, yet it also has been a recreational haven. However, it was closed earlier in the season, due to low water levels. It has never really recovered from the drought, Bessemer says. Art & Culture For those seeking cultural enrichment, King City has an interesting art gallery in town, Sol Treasures, whose current exhi- bition presents historic local images and stories, says Bessemer. e true treasure in town is likely the venerable Mission San Antonio de Padua, located just 30 minutes outside of King City, in the peaceful setting, known as the Valley of the Oaks, in Jolon. e mission was established by Father Junipero Serra in 1771, yet the structure was not built until 1810. e third of Serra's 21 missions, it remains most similar to its origin yet serves as an active parish. e mission, a cultural museum of early California Indians and culture, is open to the public daily from 10am to 4pm. A Sunday morning mass is held at 9am. "In King City, we claim Mission San Anto- nio, which carries a lot of California history," said Bessemer, "but each mission was built a day's walk apart, and Mission Soledad, established in 1791, is just up the road. San Antonio is a beautifully restored mission, one of the gems of Father Serra's ministry." King City, a fascinating blend of cultural antiquity and contemporary activity, is clearly worth the ride and a wonderful place to spend a day, or a weekend, exploring. continued from 10 Carmel Art Association Celebrating 91 years as Carmel's premier gallery Representing 100 local, professional artists Open 10am – 5pm daily Annual Miniature Raffle during the month of August!
