Scott Walker appointed to fill the remainder of Clarke's term, held a brief press conference on election night after conceding to Lucas. "I wished him Godspeed," Schmidt said of his conversation. "I will stand behind Mr. Lucas." Schmidt indicated he plans to continue serving the remainder of Clarke's unfilled position, which runs for another four months. As he sets his sights on other pur- suits, Schmidt during the news conference said he believes he brought "a very positive change" to the office. In terms of the gubernatorial race, voters c o u n t y w i d e gave a differ- ent take on who should receive the D e m o c r a t i c billing in the November general election. Mahlon Mitchell earned the top votes in the county, compared to the vote of support for Tony Evers across Wisconsin. In Milwaukee County, Mitchell received 35 percent of the vote total, while Evers clinched 31 percent of the ballots cast. By contrast, statewide results reveal Evers received 41 percent of the ballots cast across the state for the Democratic primary, while Mitchell was second, with 12 percent of the total. Evers is facing off in November against incumbent Gov. Scott Walker, who won the Republican primary this week. Mimicking the results across the state, Milwaukee County voters favored Leah Vukmir as the Republican ticket-holder for the U.S. Senate seat up for grabs in November. Vukmir is facing off against Democrat Sen. Tammy Baldwin. Countywide, Vukmir received 64 percent of the votes cast, while opponent Kevin Nicholson trailed with a 31 percent show of support. Statewide, the margin between the two candidates was closer, with Vukmir receiving 48 percent, compared to Nicholson's 42 per- cent. Residents in Milwaukee's fifth aldermanic district also had an opportunity to cast bal- lots for a position on the Common Council that was vacated earlier this year when Jim Bohl resigned to take a position within City Hall. Nikiya Dodd was the top vote getter in the five-person race for the nonpartisan position, earning 46 percent of the ballots cast. She will face off in November against Matthew Elder, who garnered support of 19 percent.
