Voters across Milwaukee County collectively denied Sheriff Richard Schmidt of his bid to seek a full term in o f f i c e . Schmidt last year was appointed to the post, filling former Sheriff David Clarke's remaining term. According to unofficial results from the Milwaukee County Election Commission, Earnell Lucas was the top vote getter in the three-way Democratic matchup for sheriff. Lucas garnered 57 percent, or 62,064 of the votes cast, for the position. Schmidt received 34 percent, or 37,661 of the votes. Robert Ostrowski trailed with 9 percent of the vote total, equat- ing to 9,705 ballots cast. No candidates from other political parties threw their hats into the ring for the partisan sheriff's position, which essen- tially gives Lucas a clear path to victory in this fall's general elec- tion in November. Lucas is one of four county candidates receiving backing from the progressive-leaning Wisconsin Working Families Party. In a statement following the election results, Lucas credited WWFP and other organizations, such as Voces de la Frontera, in helping advance his platform in a crowded field of candidates. "Their work mobilizing grassroots activities and voters was essential in my victory," Lucas said in the statement. "I am proud to work alongside them to build a safe community for all as the people's sheriff."
