By Andrew Warren TV Media very holiday has its tradiEexception. New Years Eve is tions, and no From bottles of bubbly to rowdy renditions of Auld Lang Syne once that clock strikes midnight, the ringing in of a new year is an event steeped in customs. And since 1975, the youthful, familiar face of Dick Clark has been beamed over the airwaves from New York Citys Times Square, where he brought Americas most famous New Years celebration into peoples homes with Dick Clarks New Years Rockin Eve on ABC. Sadly, Clark passed away in April this year after suffering a heart attack, but his New Years legacy will live on thanks to his chosen successor. The New Years Eve legacy of Americas Oldest Teenager will be carried on with Dick Clarks New Years Rockin Eve With Ryan Seacrest, broadcast live from Times Square on Monday, Dec. 31. Clark created the show to ring in 1973 before taking over as host in 1975, bringing his iconic youthful energy to the celebration. In the decades since, he was the face of the new year to many families. Not long after taking over Bandstand, Clark threw out the shows policy of only playing music by white musicians and began playing records of black artists alongside those of their white contemporaries. It was a bold move in an age of civil rights rumblings, and the youthful host took it even further when he abolished segregated seating amongst the studio audience. Hosting one of televisions most popular shows, taking rock n roll mainstream, creating an iconic New Years Eve special and striking a significant blow in the fight for civil rights is an enviable list of accomplishments. But thats just the tip of the iceberg. Clark also hosted a popular game show (The $10,000 Pyramid), created and hosted several radio programs, and even became involved in the restaurant industry with a chain of licensed diners bearing his name. Following the retrospective of Clarks rich and accomplished life, Dick Clarks New Years Rockin Eve gets the party going with its creators classic style. As in years past, Seacrest will play host to viewers by covering the party in Times Square, which is headlined by a number of musical acts. Taking to the stage this year are the pop rock band Neon Trees, country superstar Taylor Swift and Canadian sensation Carly Rae Jepsen. McCarthy will also be on hand throughout the evening to interview some of the hundreds of thousands of revelers that fill up Times Square each New Years Eve. Once the ball drops at midnight, the party is far from over. Instead, the fun continues on the West Coast, where Fergie hosts the Hollywood after-party with such high-profile entertainers as OneRepublic, Brandy, Flo Rida, Karmin and Pitbull. The legendary Dick Clark may have passed away, but his legacy definitely lives on. Even without him at the helm, Dick Clarks New Years Rockin Eve With Ryan Seacrest promises to carry on the rockin New Years tradition for many more years to come. The following year marked Seacrests first appearance as Clarks Rockin cohost and executive producer. Seacrest took over most of the hosting duties for the televised celebration, but the recovering Clark continued to participate in the broadcast. As part of the New Years Eve festivities, ABC will be getting the show started early this year with a two-hour special celebrating Clarks rich and rewarding life. Hosted by model and actress Jenny McCarthy and recording artist Fergie, this television event promises to bring Clarks accomplishments to life. And what a life it was. Although he got his start in radio, Clark is best remembered for his accomplishments on TV. His big break happened when he took over the show Bandstand, which was renamed American Bandstand when it moved to ABC in 1957. American Bandstand became the voice of a generation of youth. The after-school program featured teenagers dancing to popular rock n roll music, and Clarks smiling, approachable demeanor is often credited with helping to make the genre, which was often cast as the music of teenaged rebellion (and often referred to as the devils music), more acceptable to parents and older generations. American Bandstand was also instrumental in helping to $5.49 3 Convenient locations for all your party needs!
