Asked council to confirm Gielow to civilian-led body By DAVE FIDLIN Special to the Post MILWAUKEE — The composition of the civilian-led Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission continues to hang in the bal- ance after a vote against Mayor Tom Barrett's recommended appointment. Barrett had recommended William Gielow to the commission, which handles a range of issues — including hires, fires and disciplinary action — for personnel of the Milwaukee Police and Fire departments. Last month, Barrett said Gielow, a 41- year veteran of the Milwaukee Police Department, would be well suited for a vacant seat on the FPC. The would-be appointee drew concern in neigh- borhood meetings, how- ever, when he was unable to answer resi- dents' questions. Milwaukee's 14 alder- men took up the appointment at Tuesday's Common Council meeting and, after a spirited debate, voted against the pro- posal. Nine aldermen were against Gielow joining the FPC, while five cast "yes" votes. Early in the discussion, a motion to hold the appointment over to a later date was proposed, but failed when eight aldermen voted against it. A number of aldermen said they sup- ported having Gielow on the FPC, pointing out his long tenure on the MPD. He retired in 2000 and was a sworn officer during such incidents as the city's race riots in the 1960s. Alderman Michael Murphy, who said he interacted with Gielow in the past, described him as "thoughtful." Murphy said he believed Gielow was not prepared to answer questions, in part, because of a lack of assistance from Barrett's office. "This is a gentleman who has served our community very honorably," Murphy said. "He saw many things."
