Services were held Wednesday at Oak Creek Assembly of God, 7311 S. 13th St, Oak Creek. Jonathan Copeland Jr., 30, has been charged in the murder of Michalski, who leaves behind a wife and three sons. "Pretty much everybody loved him," said Police Chief Alfonso Morales, who fought back tears at a news conference July 26. The chief called Michalski a friend. On July 27, people lined streets along the route to Heritage Funeral Home, 9200 S. 27th St., Oak Creek, led by a police escort, that covered miles. "By all accounts he was a hard- working, well-respected member of the Milwaukee Police Department. Officer Michalski was a husband, father, friend, and colleague and he will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him," the Fire and Police Commission said in a statement. Michalski, a member of a spe- cial unit that went after the most dangerous criminals, was fatally shot after reportedly investigating the whereabouts of Copeland in the area of 28th and Wright streets in the Metcalfe Park area. Copeland was wanted for viola- tion of parole, possession of hero- in and harassment related to domestic violence, the MPD said. A convicted felon, Copeland has an extensive criminal record. Police said they saw Copeland go into a home, which officers entered, and the suspect fired mul- tiple shots, striking Michalski, with officers returning fire and taking Copeland into custody. Attorney General Brad Schimel addressed the dangerous t a s k M i c h a l s k i was responsi- ble for carry- ing out. "My heart aches for M i l w a u k e e PD, the city, and the fami- ly and friends of an officer killed while executing a warrant. Warrant officers are the 'tip of the spear' in law enforce- ment; they are heroes, going after the most dangerous people in our communities," Schimel said in a statement.
