26 WHARF TO WHARF SATURDAY, JULY 21, 2018 SANTA CRUZ SENTINEL SANTA CRUZ SENTINEL country team that won the state championship her sophomore year and winning CCS for the mile in track this year. Jackson Schenone was the male winner of the Howard Marcus scholarship and also a runner at Aptos High. His journey into fitness and running seemed almost predetermined since his parents owned the Santa Cruz Running Company, one of two run specialty stores in the county. "Ironically enough, I said, 'I don't know if it's something I entirely want to do,'" said Schenone. But his father, Tim, convinced him to try cross country in sixth grade and he hasn't stopped since. Schenone is headed to the University of Colorado Boulder in the fall and is set to try out for the school's cross country team in September. As far as his academics, he plans to study integrated physiology. "Athletics has been such a big part of my life and I've always had a passion for them. And I've had a passion for other people as well," he said. "If I could put that together, that could be something I could do." His running resume includes going to state for cross country in the fall and going to CCS for the mile in track. The committee also awarded the Otis Chandler Memorial Scholarship. Chloe Kimes of Soquel High School and Rolando Llamas of Watsonville High School received those awards. While the other scholarship recipients focused on running, Llamas was a football player and thrower. He wasn't sure he would return to throwing after dislocating his shoulder in football. But steady work and careful rehabilitation lead him back to the sport this year where he won in discus and shot put. But he was slightly disappointed since his shot put mark fell just a foot shy of the school record held by his coach. He plans to attend Cabrillo College in the fall and wants to continue with the sport. Unlike other sports that put you face to face with your competition, shot put and discus are sports where rivals are your friends, according to Llamas.
