TV Media Weekly | July 14 - 20, 2018 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I hear "Code Black" has been canceled. Please tell me it's not true, or at least tell me that the powers that saw fit to cancel this great show were considerate enough to have given it an ending, and not just leave us hanging. A: The way you've phrased your question means I can phrase my answer like it's good news: yes, you will get a satisfying ending to your show, which is in fact canceled. CBS made the decision to can- cel "Code Black" in late May, shortly after the show's third sea- son began. However, much like you, the show's writers met the cancella- tion with a sort of grim fatalism. Series creator Michael Seitzman said on Twitter that they sensed the end was coming and they act- ed accordingly. "We always suspected this would be the last season. We wrote it to end that way." That is to say, the current season will end in a satisfying, loose end- tying sort of way. TVSeriesFinale.com, which makes a business of tracking the fate of TV shows, got pretty cute about its explanation for the cancellation: "The patient even- tually succumbed to acute rat- ings anemia." Q: Apparently, Betty White was the first woman to win an Emmy for hosting a game show. What game show was it? A: If it weren't for the ground- breaking nature of Betty White's hosting role, "Just Men" would be completely forgotten today. But it did, as you say, give her the opportunity to become the first woman to win an Emmy for host- ing a game show, and so the short- lived show entered the history books. By most accounts it didn't de- serve to. It lasted only three months be- fore being canceled in early 1983, and it was pretty poorly reviewed while it was on. The Washington Post was particularly vicious, call- ing it "the litmus test for people who think the TV show that can make them physically ill hasn't been invented." Yes, the show deserves some praise for breaking one particular gender barrier, but it didn't do fem- inism any other favors. It was (as you can guess by the title) a battle-of-the-sexes sort of show — two female contestants competed to guess at questions about the lives of a panel of seven male celebrities. (One very dated question, posed to "WKRP in Cin- cinnati" star Tim Reid: "Tim, is your mother a swinger?") Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. Hollywood Q&A By Andrew Warren TV Media T he seaside is beautiful at any time of the year, but to most of us, the salty breezes and sandy shores are at their best right now, in the heat of summer. Not all of us live within easy reach of the seaside, but that just makes every visit all the more special. Of course, a big part of the ocean's appeal is the food, and lobster roll king Sabin Lomac is going coast to coast in his new Cooking Channel show to check out some of the best seaside eats he can find. "Seaside Snacks & Shacks" premieres Thursday, July 19, with Lomac paying a visit to Lulu's, a classy coastal dive that's run by none other than musician Jimmy Buffett's sister, where Lomac chows down on a fried green to- mato pimento cheeseburger that's served up with some clas- sic Southern gumbo. Then, on South Carolina's Daufuskie Is- land, he digs into delicious dev- iled blue crab and some incredi- ble fried chicken. It isn't just the East Coast that's on Lomac's itenerary in the premiere. Still hungry, he heads west to San Diego's shore, where a hotdog stand serves up a chili con carne dog that packs in three different meats, and a blazing-hot bombero dog that's topped with seven super-spicy salsas. For his last stop, he sticks to California and heads to Bal- boa Island for dessert. While ad- miring the gorgeous views, he checks out a local favorite: fro- zen bananas. Not content to en- joy just one, he first tries the original with chocolate and rain- bow sprinkles, and follows it up by coming up with his own spe- cialty flavor of the frozen fruit treat. Through all six episodes, Lo- mac not only hits coastal desti- nations in the west and the east, but also the north and south. The shores of Lake Michigan and the Gulf Coast have beaches that are just as spectacular as those in New England or the Carolinas, and the foods served there are just as delightful to boot. Good food, great views and seaside waves just go together, especially at this time of year. "Seaside Snacks & Shacks" pre- mieres Thursday, July 19, on Cooking Channel.
