A-10 The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, December 26, 2012 PCMS eighth grade basketball teams face their greatest challenge: PCMS staff By Alden Heuring The Pike Central Middle School semester ended with a brawl on the basketball courts Wednesday, as the boys and girls eighth grade basketball teams faced off against the PCMS staff for an afternoon of hardwood hijinks. Petersburg Mayor Jon Craig and Pike County Chief Deputy Sheriff Todd Meadors refereed the game. Craig said they had to dispense creative penalties to keep the playing field even, such as throwing yellow flags, giving five-yard penalties that allowed kids to shoot free throws from right under the bucket, and putting teachers in the box while their teammates played four-on-six against the students. While the rules of the game were bent just a tad for entertainment value, the game itself came down to a tense back-andforth in the final quarter that ended with the lady staff holding the ball to a 41-40 victory. The first and third quarters fielded the boys team against the male staff, and the even quarters pitted the girls team against the women of Pike Central Middle School, with music and hearty cheers between each quarter. At the half, it was still anyones game. I think theyre going to wear us down in the long run, said principal Chad Whitehead. Their youth is going to kick it in the second half. We definitely have them on weight, though, teacher Jeremy Ross added. However, the male staff put up a powerful third quarter, with Whitehead finding his second wind and teacher Hunter Elliot scoring multiple times. It fell to the girls to make a comeback, and up until the final minutes, it seemed they could rise to the challenge. With only a minute on the clock, they took the lead, 39-40, and when the lady staff responded with a basket for 41-40 in the staffs favor, the girls got possession and made their drive with 15 seconds left to seal the game. I think the girls have them, said eighth grade boys player Jared McCord. Theyve held the teachers down all quarter. The shot rolled across the rim, bounced out, and was rebounded by the teachers. Even though the kids didnt win it in the end, a roaring good time was had by all, and it certainly beat waiting for the clock to chime 3:15 on the last day of the semester. When the emcee asked the packed grandstands whether they had fun, the reply was a deafening YES! Im glad the kids had a good time, and I think its good for them to interact with adults in a positive way like this, Craig said. And I want to add that my officiating was fair and objective, despite the fact that my wife played on the staff team. Im just glad we won, because after all the trashtalking I did over the P.A. system, I never would have lived it down if we lost, said guidance counselor Arlene Petty. Ryne Biesterveld throws his weight around going to the bucket against Gabe Elliott and Tanner Meadows. Hannah Yager fires up a shot.
