By Sheryl Popp Special to the News Graphic Iconic entertainment group Kids From Wisconsin celebrates 50th season College student Jan Hora will have the chance to conduct in his hometown CEDARBURG — Kids from Wisconsin has performed for about 10 million people in Wisconsin and the Midwest since its first performance in 1969. The "kids" are from all over the state, and can audition for the group while they're aged 15 to 20 years. Cedarburg native Jan Hora has been with KFW for three years. Hora learned of the group from his music teacher at the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire, where he will enter his senior year this fall as a business major with a music minor. He played trumpet for KFW for two seasons, and this summer, he is their first ever tour intern. "Since it's the 50th anniversary," Hora said, "they thought they could use another person to help handle logistics and also to help motivate the kids to do their best." KFW performs about 60 shows each summer, and has a run at Wisconsin State Fair for 11 days straight. It will perform in Cedarburg for the first time at the Cedarburg PAC on July 5 at 7:00 p.m. The theme of this year's revue is "Shine the Light." The show takes a look back at its all-time audience favorite numbers as well as five decades of Broadway music. The first half of the show begins with '70s disco and then '80s and '90s popular music. The second half is more current and will include music from Beyonce and Bruno Mars. "Everyone is excited about the songs this year." said Hora, "We're modernizing a bit." Hora answered the following questions about his experiences: Q. How long have you played trumpet, and was that always your favorite instrument? Hora: I began to play in the fifth grade. My parents always encouraged me to play. I tried both clarinet and trumpet, and really liked the trumpet. I began taking private lessons in the seventh grade and got a professional model trumpet in the eighth grade. That motivated me to practice more. I was asked to fill in on French horn in the sixth grade - that lasted six months before the trumpet called me back. Q. Is the schedule at State Fair hard to handle? Hora: We do two shows a day, plus a Kids encore of numbers that we choose of about 30 minutes on another stage. It is a lot of work, but we get to go see other concerts at night. And we were asked by the band Foreigner to sing and dance in several of their shows. Q. You have the chance to conduct this year. How did that happen? Hora: I hung around the conductors.
