J erry Herron's Williamsburg Yellow Jackets finally got over the so-called "Hazard hump" last season by defeating the rival Bulldogs in the Class A, Region 7 title game, 21-7, before falling in the state title game to Mayfield, 42-0. Now the Yellow Jackets need to find a way to get back to Feix Field, Houchens/LT Smith Stadium. It's not going to be easy, and according to Herron, his players are not satisfied in just advancing to the Class A state title game. Williamsburg returns 16 seniors and 12 juniors this season and the expectations of winning a state title are there. "That's the big thing, we've got to stay focused," Herron said. "You know, these are just teenage kids, and sometimes it's hard to keep them from believing all of the hype and everything that comes with it. They've done a good job really, though. They have seen all of this hype, so we just try to keep them focused this summer on what we needed to do to get where we want to be. We got their attention by telling them that even though we reached the state finals last season, we still got beat, 42-0. Our goal is to win the state championship. They need to remember we went home sad last sea- son. "We have a lot of talent returning and that is big for us," he added. "The thing is we've got to realize this is a new season. We haven't beaten anyone and now teams want to beat us. So we've got to be ready each and every game. We've always won- dered what it took to win the region and to get to the state championship game, and now we know. We've got to figure out now how to accomplish the one goal that has eluded us and that's winning a state championship. I know everyone has really worked hard to get to that next step. We know what it takes to get there and now the kids want to go that one final step. Everyone is ready to get things going and see what hap- pens. We do realize it's a long season, and anything can happen, so the only thing we can control is us, and we're going to continue to work to get better." BY LES DIXON • STAFF WRITER
