BUSINESS By CATHERINE JOZWIK Special to the Post MILWAUKEE — Music lovers will have even more reason to head to Summerfest this year. With the latest technology and an updated design, the new-and-improved U.S. Cellular Connection Stage is expected to enhance the concertgoing experience for patrons and performers. Designed by Eppstein Uhen Architects, the stage's construction began in September 2017 and was completed this month. To honor the new stage, DJ and electron- ic music producer Diplo will perform at a free concert today. Gates open at 7 p.m., and the first 1,000 patrons will receive a free Summerfest general admission ticket. "This is our stage-warming," said Don Smiley, Summerfest president and CEO, at Tuesday's media tour of the new U.S. Cellular Connection Stage. He added that "bringing Diplo to the stage was an incredi- bly generous gesture" on U.S. Cellular's part. John Heimsch, director of sales for U.S. Cellular, said he is looking forward to bring- ing a diverse mix of artists to the stage. "We couldn't be more grateful for this opportunity," he said. New stage features New stage area features include a 60-foot wide and over 2,400-square-foot perform- ance area (double the size of the previous stage), a 27-foot wide LED video screen (the largest on the Summerfest grounds), easier access for concert attendees, a scenic view of Lake Michigan; and a new walkway bar. Benches with charging ports for mobile devices help ensure that patrons stay con- nected. Improved backstage amenities include a selfie station where excited fans can take photos with bands, updated dressing rooms with shower facilities, and meet-and-greet and loft VIP areas for media interviews. Jason Stuewe, lead internal architectural designer for Milwaukee World Festival, Inc., believes the new stage, with its greater accessibility and state-of-the-art features, will help increase Summerfest attendance. "By widening the main walkway, we've increased capacity and made it safer," Stuewe said. "We're able to allow for better patron ingress and egress." Also, the new 12,000-pound video screen ("the previous stage was only able to handle about half of that," said Stuewe) allows for better concert viewing. "The biggest thing was relocating the stage. We're creating an enhanced area with improved amenities. If anything, it's improved perception," said Stuewe. Summerfest stage headliners include old- school rappers Sugar Hill Gang with Grandmaster Mele Mel and Scorpio Furious 5 (6 p.m. Thursday), '80s New Wave band A Flock of Seagulls (6 p.m. July 1), reggae group The Wailers (10 p.m. July 3), alterna- tive band The Fray (10 p.m. July 4) and clas- sic rockers Molly Hatchet (4 p.m. July 7). Previous performers have included indie band Panic! At The Disco, and rock bands Shinedown and AWOLNATION.
