B-6 Church Tuesday, June 19, 2018 South Gibson Star-Times what each group embraces and/or negates as to what is a genuine "Christian" teach- ing or doctrine. The polarized brethren fail to contemplate the appli- cation of scriptures. For ex- ample from the Old Testa- ment Amos writes, "Can two walk together, except they be agreed? " Paul writes in the New Testament, "Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment." This post-Christian era in which we live encourages us to pray and contend for the "unity of the faith" that was "delivered to the saints," and strive for the "knowledge of the Son of God," who came to reconcile us to God! Think about it as you pray! WARRENTON ST. STEPHENS COMMUNITY CHURCH 12152 S. 200 E., Warrenton Pastor Brian Pullum Sunday Worship 9 a.m.; Sunday School 10 a.m. Insight by Dave Ingler Contentment and gratitude "…for I have learned, in whatsoev- er state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." (Philip- pians 4:11-13) One sin which must be kept from creeping into the believer's heart is the attitude of discontentment. We must al- ways be thankful for the gifts God has given us and careful that we never be- come critical of His provision for our lives. Like the Apostle Paul, we must come to the point where our gratitude to God is not based on the amount of our material possessions or the cir- cumstances we find ourselves in but on the fact that we can face life and all of its challenges because the living Christ strengthens us and lives His life through us. Watch for the deceitfulness within your heart that claims to be thankful for all things. It is easy to be thankful when life is going your way and the dai- ly necessities come from your abun- dance rather than a struggle. It is easy to praise God when all of your desires are being met and hardships and suf- fering are removed. It is easy to say, "God is good" when health, aptitude and opportunities abound. Be certain that your contentment and gratitude is genuine and prepare today for the real testing of your faith when things are not good and in your darkness Satan whispers, "God has forsaken you." It is then that your test- ing begins. And it is there that dark- ness and sorrow abound within the soul that is unprepared for that hour. But for the one who has learned from God's school that neither tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword can separate them from the love of God, there will always be light within that darkness and the sweet voice of the Holy Spirit which whispers, "…and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." (Hebrews 13:5) Rest assured that our loving Heaven- ly Father is dedicated to meeting our needs according to His divine timing and divine plan. For this reason, Je- sus taught His disciples to pray, "Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth." (Luke 11:1) Have you come to the point where you can pray that prayer without reser- vation—even if God's will and the out- come He will bring is different than what you desire? It is imperative that you do, for our agreeing with God's timing and plans is the foundation for consistent thankfulness. Any other re- sponse will lead to ingratitude, worry and a forfeiture of our peace as we at- tempt to play God. Two Minutes With the Bible by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam The love of God Millions of people — even religious people — are afraid of God and are struggling to earn His favor. They suppose that salvation is the reward of showing enough love to Him. If only they would believe what God Himself says, that if we are ever saved it will be entirely because He loved us and graciously provided for our salvation. The Apostle Paul, in the Bible, called God "the God of love" (II Cor. 13:11) and John declared that "God IS love" (1 John 4:8). Thus John goes on to say: "Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation [satisfaction] for our sins" (1 John 4: 10). This is why salvation is so often called a "gift" in the Bible. It is the ex- pression of God's love to sinners. And so St. Paul tells us: "[We] were by nature the children of wrath, even as others, but God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love where- with he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us to- gether with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)" (Eph. 2:3-5). "…after that the kindness and love of god our savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to HIS MERCY He saved us…" (Tit. 3:4,5). Does all this mean that God over- looks sin or condones it? By no means! In His love He paid for our sins on Cal- vary's cross "that He might be Just, and the Justifier of him that believeth in Jesus" (Rom. 3:26). This is why we read in Rom. 5:8: "…God commendeth his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners christ died for us." chapter of Revelation, where we are urged to rejoice, ex- ult, and give God glory, "for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready." It is in this chapter also that John records how the angel said to him, "Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb." Supper! The meal that we enjoy at close of the day when all the family has been safely gathered in. At the beginning of hu- man history, our First Par- ents chose to eat fruit that was forbidden, so that it was necessary that they be ex- pelled from the garden, and a cheribum holding a flaming sword installed at the Gar- den's east to prevent their re- entry. But at the end of time, gates of pearl will be flung open wide that the troops of the reconciled may come pouring in through them. When all those invited have been seated at that Sup- per-table, then will be real- ized in the purpose of God in his creation: a redeemed people will dwell fully in the presence of a holy God. crossroads BAPTIST CHURCH Join us for Parent Night on Friday, June 29 at 6 pm CDT We will have a Car Show immediately following the pro- gram featuring Petersburg's Timeless Classics Car Club. 2789 STATE ROAD 57, OAKLAND CITY For more information, call 812-749-3377, visit crossroadsoc.org or email crossroadsoc@gmail.com June 25-29 • 6-8 pm CDT AGES: 3 YEARS TO ENTERING 6TH GRADE Vacation Bible School We want you to be part of THE CREW!
