Poplar Street, Petersburg By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net A seven-run fifth in- ning by Northeast Dubois erased an 8 -6 deficit as the Jeeps rallied for a 15 -8 vic- tory over host Pike Central in high school baseball ac- tion on Monday, May 14. Northeast Dubois se- nior left-handed pitcher Al- ex Harder – who relieved sophomore righthander Reece Bauer with one out in the fourth inning and the game tied at 6 -6 – held the Chargers to no runs on three hits while striking out four over the final 3- 2/3 innings to get the win. Bauer, meanwhile, gave up eight runs – seven of which were earned – on nine hits while walking one and striking out three. "I was happy with the way we hit (Bauer)," said Pike Central head coach Josh McDonald, whose team slipped to 1-21. "I thought we hit the lefty hard, too. They just made some plays." Junior Race Britton started on the hill for the Chargers, allowing six runs – four of which were earned – on six hits while walking three and strik- ing out three before being relieved by junior Bren- non Benton at the start of the fifth inning with an 8 - 6 lead. Benton would face just four batters – three of whom reached base and scored – before turning the ball over to junior Jo- ey Church, who walked the only two batters he faced. Junior Kyle Williams was subsequently summoned to the mound and pitched the final 1-2/3 innings, al- lowing four runs – only one of which was earned – on four hits while walking two and striking out one. Church led the Char- gers offensively, collect- ing two hits – both sin- gles – in four at-bats while scoring two runs and driv- ing in three. Junior Brax- ton Rice and sophomore Furman to run Cross Country at OCU Cailey Furman will be continuing her cross coun- try competition at Oakland City University this coming fall. She signed her letter of intent last Friday with Pike Central cross country head coach Josh Roach, her par- ents Joe and Adrienne Fur- man and brother Brayden in attendance at Pike Central High School. Cailey said, "I like Oak- land City because of the small classes. It's a small campus and I feel like I will do better with small class- es. It's a private campus. I know another girl running cross country there and I think it will be good. Asked about coach Josh Roach, Cailey said, "Coach Roach has been a big help in getting me to this stage, and I thank him a lot. As a team, Pike Central By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Senior Halley Pow- ers placed second in the 800 -meter run as the Pike Central High School girls' track and field team fin- ished sixth in the Pocket Athletic Conference Girls' Championships on Tues- day, May 8, at Tell City's Legion Field. Powers – who placed sixth in pole vault with a leap of 7 feet, 6 inches – posted a season-best time of 2:33.10 in the 800 -meter run. South Spencer junior Tristin Goffinet finished first with a time of 2:25.39. Powers also teamed up with three freshmen – Jen- na Meyer, Libby Stone and Lauren Young – to place second in the 1,600 -meter relay with a season-best time of 4:21.45. Junior Alyssa Jenkins, after finishing third in pre- liminaries for discus with a throw of 95 feet, 8 inch- es, took third place in the finals with a throw of 95 feet, 9 inches. Jenkins al- so placed seventh in shot put with a throw of 29 feet, 5 -1/2 inches, after finish- ing seventh in preliminar- ies with a throw of 29 feet, 4 inches. Young, after finishing fourth in preliminaries for the 100 -meter hurdles, took fifth place in the finals with a time of 18.12 seconds. She also placed fifth in the 300 -meter hurdles with a season-best time of 52.63 seconds. In addition, Stone placed fifth in the 400 -meter dash with a season-best time of 1:04.23, and senior Taylor Deffendoll tied with Forest Park junior Katelyn Englert for fifth place in high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 8 inch- es. Placing eighth in an in- dividual event for the Lady Chargers was Stone in long By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Senior Gavin Boyd placed first in pole vault as the Pike Central High School boys' track and field team finished eighth in the storm-interrupted Pocket Athlet- ic Conference Boys' Championships, which were held Thursday, May 10, and Friday, May 11, at Tell City's Legion Field. Boyd, who was fourth in the event with a leap of 11 feet as a sophomore and second with a leap of 12 feet as a junior, was awarded first place – based on misses – after he, Chargers sophomore Tyler Kirby and South Spencer senior Luke Walker all recorded leaps of 13 feet. Boyd, who tied his personal-best leap, was success- ful on his first attempt at 13 feet while both Kirby and Walker cleared the height on their second attempts. Kirby – the defending PAC pole vault champion with a leap of 12 feet, 6 inches as a freshman in 2018 – claimed second place based on misses after having cleared 12 feet, 6 inches on his second attempt. Walker – who won the PAC pole vault competition in 2015 and 2016 – placed third after clearing 12 feet, 6 inches on his third and final attempt. "Both Gavin and Tyler were happy they placed so well in the conference, but both were also a little upset because they wanted to jump higher," said Pike Cen- tral volunteer assistant coach Eric Knight, who set the school pole vault record of 14 feet in 2002. "Both have been jumping higher in practices and wanted to show that off in the big meets." "Tyler really wanted to win it again this year," Knight added. "He was a little upset, but was also happy that Pike Central still had both first and second place." Boyd, Kirby and Walker – along with Heritage Hills senior Jacob Luebbehusen and South Spencer sopho- more Dylan Goodman – had all made successful leaps at a height of 12 feet on Thursday, May 10, before light- ning from an approaching storm caused officials to de- lay and, ultimately, suspend the meet until the next evening. "That put us coming back on Friday and starting the meet at 12 feet, 6 inches," said Knight, who noted that the pole vault competition had begun at a height of 10 feet. "That is really tough because that is not a normal height to start at. For example, the regional meet starts at 12 foot, and the state meet starts at 13. So that was kind of a high height to come off the bus and clear." "We will continue to practice hard for a couple more days to get us to sectionals on Thursday at Princeton," Knight added. "Both Gavin and Tyler should be seed- ed up pretty high for the meet." Lubbehusen placed fourth with a leap of 12 feet, 6 inches, while Goodman finished fifth with a leap of 12 feet. Placing sixth in an individual event for the Chargers was sophomore Sam Theising in the 300 -meter hurdles with a time of 45.21 seconds.
