The hike will last approximate- ly two hours. The nature hike will fea- ture a stop at a 2017 con- structed pier at Snakey Point Marsh, pollinator plantings, a discussion on an Eastern Box Turtle study at the Refuge, and bird watching and grass- land habitat management activities. We will observe the results of a controlled burn and check out a Barn Owl nesting box. The hike will start at the Boyd's Trail parking lot, just east of Snakey Point. Suitable clothing and shoes, as well as insect repellent, are suggested. Maps of the Refuge and more than 11 miles of hik- ing trails will be available. Wildlife biologist and current Friends of Pato- ka River National Wildlife Refuge vice-president, Da- vid Howell, will guide the event. To get to the Boyd's Trail parking lot, head east from Oakland City on State Road 64. Just outside the city, turn left (north) on- to paved CR 1275 E. Con- tinue about one-half mile and bear left onto CR 1300 E, which becomes gravel. Continue about one mile to the Boyd's Trail parking lot on the left. Look for posted brown Refuge signs along the way. The Pike Central High School softball team dropped a 4-3 loss at North Posey on Tuesday, May 8, defeated visiting Forest Park 10 -4 on Thursday, May 10, and lost to visiting Gibson Southern 14-10 on Satur- day, May 12. North Posey 4, Pike Central 3 Trailing 4-0, the Lady Chargers rallied for three runs in the top of the sev- enth inning and had a run- ner on third base with one out. However, North Posey sophomore pitcher Megan Brenton got the next two batters – sophomore center- fielder Lauren Vaughn and freshman designated hitter Addie Johnson – to hit pop- ups on the infield to end the contest. The Lady Vikings took a 1-0 lead on a run-scoring sin- gle by freshman third base- man Jenna Heath with two outs in the fourth inning, then plated three more runs in the sixth inning – on a two-run double by se- nior rightfielder Mackenzie Atkins and a sacrifice fly by Heath – to extend their lead to 4-0. Pike Central, after be- ing held to just four hits in the game's first six innings, opened the seventh an in- field single by senior short- stop Audra Stone, who ad- vanced to second on an error by North Posey sophomore shortstop Emily Abernathy. Stone moved over to third base when the next batter, junior pitcher Alizé Padgett, followed with a single. An er- ror by Lady Vikings sopho- more second baseman Ry- lie Farr on a grounder hit by senior first baseman Demi Croak allowed Stone to score – cutting the North Posey lead to 4-1 – while Padgett advanced to third base. A fter Croak stole sec- ond base, senior third base- man Jalah Barnes singled to drive in Padgett to trim the deficit to 4-2. When Barnes subse- quently stole second base, an error by Abernathy al- lowed Croak to score, pull- ing the Lady Chargers to within 4-3. Barnes would advance to third base on a infield ground-out by junior sec- ond baseman Emily Carnah- an, but would be left strand- ed there. Barnes and Vaughn col- lected two singles each while Carnahan, Padgett and Stone all had one single. Senior pitcher Peyton Sor- gius, who took the loss for the Lady Chargers, pitched 5 -1/3 innings, allowing four runs – all earned – on eight hits while striking out six. With the loss, Pike Cen- tral fell to 9 -7 overall and 3- 3 in the Pocket Athletic Con- ference. Heath led North Posey (3-14-1 overall, 1-6 -1 in the PAC) with two hits while driving in two runs. Bren- ton also had two hits – both singles – while Atkins went 1-for-3 with a double, drove in two runs and scored one. Pike Central 10, Forest Park 4 Senior first baseman Demi Croak, senior right- fielder Peyton Sorgius and sophomore centerfielder Lauren Vaughn drove in two runs each to lead the Lady Chargers. Trailing 3-1, Pike Central sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning while scoring eight runs to take a 9 -3 lead. Senior left fielder Jordan Montgomery led off and reached on an error. A fter the next batter, senior short- stop Audra Stone, drew a walk, a bunt single by Sor- gius loaded the bases. Croak followed with a sin- gle, scoring Montgomery and Stone to tie the score at 3-3, while Sorgius advanced to third base. One out later, senior catch- er Lexi Halbrader reached on an error that allowed Sor- gius to score to give the La- dy Chargers a 4-3 lead. A fter junior second base- man Emily Carnahan drew a walk to load the bases, a sin- gle by Vaughn and a fielder's choice grounder by junior pitcher Alizé Padgett plat- ed two more runs to extend Pike Central's lead to 6 -3. Senior leftfielder Jordan Montgomery and senior shortstop Audra Stone – the second with the bases load- ed – forced in another run, giving the Lady Chargers a 7-3 lead. Sorgius followed with a single, scoring Vaughn and Montgomery to cap the eight-run rally. Padgett picked up the win for Pike Central, allow- ing four runs – two of which were earned – on six hits while walking one and strik- ing out three. With the win, the Lady Chargers improved to 10 -7 overall and 4-3 in the PAC. Forest Park, meanwhile, slipped to 8 -9 -1 overall and 1-6 -1 in the PAC. Gibson Southern 14, Pike Central 10 The visiting Lady Titans, who pounded out 17 hits, scored four runs in the first inning and three more in the third inning to take a 7- 0 lead. Pike Central scored twice in the bottom of the third in- ning when Jalah Barnes belt- ed a run-scoring single and sophomore centerfielder Lauren Vaughn was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 7-2. A fter Gibson Southern tacked two more runs on- to its lead in the top of the fourth inning, the Lady Chargers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the frame – including two on a bases-loaded double by Sor- gius – to close to within 9 -6. The Lady Titans, howev- er, would plate four runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to extend their lead to 14-6. A seventh-inning rally – during which Pike Central scored four runs – would fall short as the Lady Chargers slipped to 10 -8 overall and 4- 4 in the PAC. Sorgius led Pike Central, going 2-for-4 with a dou- ble while scoring two runs and driving in three. Senior leftfielder Jordan Montgom- ery had two hits in four at- bats, scored twice and drove in one, while Croak went 1-for-3 with three runs bat- ted in. Sorgius took the loss for the Lady Chargers, allowing 14 runs – 12 of which were earned – on 17 hits while striking out three. Freshman Olivia Stunkel picked up the win in relief, al- lowing four runs – all earned – on five hits while walking two in four innings. Junior Lyndsi Adamson pitched the first three innings, allowing six runs – five of which were earned – on five hits while walking three and striking out one. With the win, Gibson Southern improved to 11-8 overall and 5 -1 in the PAC. In the junior varsity con- test, freshman Carson Kruse fired a one-hit shutout as the Lady Titans defeated Pike Central 5 -0. Kruse also walked one and struck out four in the five-inning contest. The Lady Chargers' lone hit – a single by freshman third baseman Addie John- son – came with one out in the fourth inning. Junior Alizé Padgett took the loss for Pike Central, al- lowing five runs – only one of which was earned – on eight hits while walking one and striking out eight. Pike Central will host South Knox on Wednesday, May 16, before closing out the regular season at North- east Dubois on Thursday, May 17. The Lady Chargers will open the sectional tourna- ment – which is being host- ed by Pike Central – with a first-round contest against Vincennes Lincoln on Mon- day, May 21, at 6 p.m. Lady Chargers win one of three PAC contests The Pike Central High School softball team held a senior recognition cere- mony prior to the start of its home game against Gibson Southern on Satur- day, May 12. Jim Capozella photo PCMS girls' softball team drops 4-2 loss at Southridge The Pike Central Mid- dle School softball team fell to 10 -2 with a 4-2 loss at Southridge on Monday, May 14. The Lady Chargers scored their runs off nine hits and one Southridge er- ror. Eighth grader Sophie Carnahan had two singles while eighth graders Hallie Bailey and Brynn Hillyard and seventh graders Mad- elyn Fiscus, Alyna Sharp, Delaney Welch, Chloe Wil- liams and Chloe Willis belt- ed out one single each. Hillyard took the loss for Pike Central, allowing four runs – three of which were earned – on six hits while striking out one in three innings. Carnahan pitched the final inning, allowing no runs. The Lady Chargers' B-team, meanwhile, re- mained undefeated at 12- 0 with an 11-8 victory over Southridge. Pike Central scored its runs off seven hits, five walks and four er- rors by the Lady Raiders. Sixth grader Karley Ka- vanaugh had two singles, sixth grader Lexie Onyett hit a triple and sixth grad- ers Haylie Fulcher, Jaidyn Gogel, Brailey Mills and Macey Stilwell, collected one single each. Kavanaugh picked up the win for the Lady Chargers, allowing six runs – four of which were unearned – in three innings. Onyett got the save, allowing two runs – both of which were earned – while striking out one in the final two innings. Pike Central, which host- ed South Knox on Tuesday, May 15, will travel to Barr- Reeve on Wednesday, May 16, before closing out the regular season at home against the Lady Vikings on Thursday, May 17. PCMS softball team defeats Heritage Hills 11-0, falls 5-4 to Jasper The Pike Central Middle School softball team defeat- ed host Heritage Hills 11-0 in a four-inning game played on Monday, May 7. The Lady Chargers scored their runs off nine hits and three errors by Her- itage Hills. Eighth grader Hallie Bailey had two hits – a single and a double – and seventh grader Alyna Sharp hit her second home run of the season. Eighth graders Sophie Carnahan and Av- ery Hunt both had doubles, while eighth graders Mal- lory Hunt, Brynn Hillyard and seventh graders Del- aney Welch and Chloe Wil- lis collected one single each. Carnahan picked up the win, giving up two hits and striking out one in the first three innings. Seventh grad- er Chloe Williams pitched the final inning – striking out one – to get the save as Pike Central improved to 10 -0. The Pike Central B team improved to 10 -0 with a 15 - 2 four-inning victory over the Lady Patriots. The Lady Chargers belted out 18 hits, including four by sixth grad- er Karley Kavanaugh, who had one single, two doubles and one triple. Sixth grad- er Lexie Onyett added three hits – one double and two tri- ples – while seventh grader Alyna Sharp had two singles and a double. Collecting two hits each for Pike Central were sev- enth graders Chloe Willis (one double and one single) and Madelyn Fiscus (two singles). Sixth grader Brai- ley Mills, Haylie Fulcher and Jaidyn Gogel and eighth grader Nevaeh Lemond add- ed one single each. Onyett pitched all four innings for the Lady Char- gers, allowing two runs – both earned – on three hits while striking out two. • Pike Central suffered its first loss of the season with a 5 -4 defeat at Jasper on Tuesday, May 8. The Lady Chargers (10 -1) scored their runs off six hits and three errors by the Lady Wildcats. Eighth grader Sophie Carnahan led Pike Central with two hits – a single and a triple – and seventh grader Delaney Welch hit a triple. Eighth grader Mallory Hunt and seventh graders Chloe Willis and Chloe Williams added one single each. Williams started, allow- ing three runs – all un- earned – off two hits while striking out two. The B team, meanwhile, improved to 11-0 with a 5 -4 victory over Jasper. The La- dy Chargers scored their runs off three hits – singles by sixth graders Karley Ka- vanaugh, Lexie Onyett and Haylie Fulcher – and four er- rors by the Lady Wildcats. The Lady Chargers, who traveled to Southridge on Monday, May 14, and host- ed South Knox on Tues- day, May 15, will visit Barr- Reeve on Wednesday, May 16, before returning home to host the Lady Vikings on Thursday, May 17, to close out the season. PCHS girls' tennis team closes regular season with 5-0 win at Tell City The Pike Central High School girls' tennis team closed out the regular sea- son on Monday, May 14, with a 5 -0 victory at Tell City. At No. 1 singles, La- dy Chargers senior Cass Conder defeated Tell City junior Caitlin Teague 7-5, 6 -4. At No. 2 singles, Lady Chargers junior Meredith Benson defeated Tell City junior Beth Whitworth 6 - 0, 6 -1. At No. 3 singles, Lady Chargers sophomore Shel- by Vaughn defeated Tell City senior Claire Zellers 6 -1, 6 -2. At No. 1 doubles, the La- dy Chargers' team of junior Kirsten Jansen and sopho- more Audrey Keepes de- feated the Tell City team of junior Ireland Gaynor and sophomore Hannah Rhodes 6 -0, 6 -1.
