The Common Council on Tuesday voted unanimously in favor of legislation that puts the elected body on record in oppos- ing Ascension's plans for the ven- erable health care facility. Aldermen have argued Ascension's decision could leave portions of the community under- served. Early this month, Ascension executives announced plans of operational changes at the St. Joseph site, 5000 W. Chambers St., including the elimination of sur- gical and inpatient stays. According to data released by Ascension, about 80 percent of St. Joseph's patients are covered through Medicare and Medicaid. An additional 5 percent of the hos- pital's patients are uninsured. Both scenarios mean the hospital receives less income for the serv- ices it renders. Alderman Khalif Rainey, whose district includes the St. Joseph campus, served as the pri- mary sponsor of the council's adopted legislation prompting Ascension to reconsider its deci- sion. Steps to ensure care After Tuesday's vote, Rainey in a news release said he planned additional measures designed to ensure near North Side residents continue to receive critical servic- es in close proximity. "I am plan- ning to spon- sor a commu- nication file to trigger a hearing that will allow for the council to continue dis- cussions with Ascension on this critically important issue," Rainey said in a statement.
