Poplar Street, Petersburg By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Shoals scored six runs in the seventh inning to snap a 0 -0 tie as the Jug Rox defeated host Pike Central 6 -0 in high school baseball action on Wednesday, April 4. Chargers junior Race Brit- ton, pitching in relief of junior Braxton Rice, threw a scoreless sixth inning before Shoals load- ed the bases on a pair of four- pitch walks and a single with one out in the seventh. With Jug Rox sophomore catcher Dalton Roush at the plate, a wild pitch by Britton al- lowed junior right fielder Tan- ner Doane to score from third base, giving Shoals a 1-0 lead. The Jug Rox, however, would add insult to injury, literally, as Doane crashed into Britton when Britton – covering home plate as Chargers junior catcher Brennon Benton recovered the ball – attempted to tag him out. Apparently injuring his glove hand during the collision, Brit- ton subsequently slammed his glove onto the ground, caus- ing the ball to pop free, which allowed Shoals junior left field- er J.D. Troutman – who had ad- vanced to third base on the wild pitch – to score to extend the Jug Rox lead to 2-0. "I would have handled it dif- ferent if I would have been the other coach, but that's me, be- cause the play was, realistically, dead," Pike Central head coach Josh McDonald said. "I mean, he had the ball in his glove. The only mistake (Brit- ton) made was he should have called time before he threw the glove down." "He took his glove off and threw it down because he was scared he'd hurt his hand, and that's when the ball kinda popped out and rolled around," McDonald add- ed. "It probably could have been handled differently on both sides, but that's the heat of the moment, and by the time that it happened, you can't go back and change that." A fter having his injured wrist checked out by trainer Aubree Block in the Chargers' dugout, Britton returned to the mound to continue pitching. "I made him stop in the dug - out and I just asked him, 'Race, do you want to go back out and pitch? '" McDonald said. "It wasn't anything that I felt could have hurt him any more. So I let him go out and pitch." The die was cast, howev- er, as Roush belted a double to right-centerfield, scoring junior pitcher Kenyon Sorrells to give the Jug Rox a 3-0 lead. The next batter, sophomore shortstop Dayson Wright, sin- gled to left field to drive in Roush, extending Shoals lead to 4-0. Then, with Wright on third base and junior centerfielder Caleb Belcher – who reached when he was hit by a pitch – on second, Britton got sopho- more third baseman Max Fisch- By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central High School softball team proved that sometimes it's better to be late than never on Thursday, April 5. Having to wait until a bus finished its route before they could make their trip to Loogoo- tee, the Lady Chargers arrived well after the game's scheduled 5:30 p.m. start time. "It was all quick-paced from the time we got there," Pike Central head coach Rick Weisman said. However, once the game started shortly after 6 p.m., the Lady Chargers wasted lit- tle time, sending 11 batters to the plate while scoring seven first-inning runs and cruising to an 8 -1 victory. "We haven't had much luck with them," Weisman said of the Lady Lions, who had de- feated Pike Central each of the past two sea- sons. "It seems like whether we're there or at home, they've always got our number, and I kind of stressed that to the girls, you know. It was about time for us to get back on top of them. They really got fired up about it." Senior shortstop Audra Stone opened the game by drawing a walk, then – after senior left fielder Jordan Montgomery struck out – advanced to second on a passed ball. When the next batter, senior catcher Lexi Halbrader, was retired on a pop-up to Loo- gootee catcher Tyanna Graber in foul territo- ry, the Lady Lions found themselves just one out away from ending the inning. That third out, however, would prove very elusive. A fter Stone advanced to third base on a single by senior first baseman Demi Croak, senior third baseman Jalah Barnes lofted a fly ball that Loogootee right fielder Jayleigh Wagoner could not catch up to, allowing both Stone and Croak to score as Barnes cruised The Pike Central High School boys' track and field team held off visiting North Posey for a 67-65 victory on Monday, April 9.
