here are all sorts of heroes
on television. While some
wear capes and tights, oth-
ers wear badges. Some
wield gavels, and others wield
stethoscopes. Now, firefighters are
poised to heat up prime time,
thanks to a new television series
from one of the industry's most
prolific producers.
In Seattle, a team of firefighters
form a bond like no other as they
work and train together 24-7 in
"Station 19," premiering Thursday,
March 22, on ABC. A "Grey's Anat-
omy" spinoff, the ensemble drama
follows dedicated firefighters as
they face the challenges of their
high-stress careers, while also nav-
igating the ups and downs of their
personal lives.
The 10-episode series was cre-
ated by award-winning "Grey's
Anatomy" producer and writer
Stacy McKee. It's produced by
ABC Studios and Shondaland,
while McKee, Shonda Rhimes
("Scandal"), Betsy Beers ("The
Catch") and Paris Barclay ("Sons
of Anarchy") serve as executive
producers.
"Station 19" follows a familiar
formula that's paid off for shows
such as "Grey's Anatomy," which
chronicles the lives of the doctors
and nurses at the city's fictional
Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
With Rhimes involved, fans of her
hit medical show are likely eager
to see some of its trademark high-
intensity drama and romance in
the new firehouse series. Howev-
er, during the 2018 TCA Winter
Press Tour, McKee made it clear
that her vision for the spinoff dif-
fers somewhat from "Grey's Anat-
omy," even though the firehouse
is just three blocks away from the
famed hospital.
"Most of our characters are on
site and in the middle of action se-
quences," McKee explained, "so
there's a certain level of adrenalin
and energy that comes with that
that you don't necessarily find in
the same way at 'Grey's.'"
Running into a burning build-
ing is not for the faint of heart,
but a heroic few have the cour-
age and compassion to risk their
lives to help others. It takes a spe-
cial person to step up to such a
task, and the characters in "Sta-
tion 19" represent the best of the
best. Jaina Lee Ortiz ("Rose-
wood") leads the cast as bold
young firefighter Andy Herrera,
who was practically raised in the
firehouse by Capt. Pruitt Herrera
(Miguel Sandoval, "Medium"),
her father and boss.
