Patoka River NWR entering spring prescribed fire season The Patoka River Na- tional Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Oakland City has entered its spring prescribed fire season. The spring prescribed fire season typically runs between February and April 15. During this time frame, smoke may be vis - ible above the Refuge. Prescribed burning on the refuge is conducted to improve wildlife habi - tat and reduce the accu- mulation of fuels that lead to severe wildfires. Pato- ka River NWR has his- torically treated between 500 and 700 acres annu- ally with prescribed fire. A prescribed fire during this time period is espe- cially productive for hab- itat management and brush control. Patoka River NWR staff have informed local officials of the planned management actions. Prescribed fire will only be conducted when con - ditions allow for safe im- plementation. Any ques- tions concerning the pre- scribed fire season may be directed to Refuge manager Bill McCoy or Fire Management Offi- cer Brian Winters at 812- 749 -3199.
