"To win again," said Earley, who had placed first in the 195 -pound weight class as a seventh grader. A fter picking up a win by forfeit in the quarterfinals and winning by pin against Garrett Keller of Heri- tage Hills in the semifinals, Earley pinned Southridge's Eric Venegas – in 27 seconds – during the cham- pionship bout to improve to 22-2 while claiming his second consec- utive PAC title. "We assumed Gunnar would go in a number one seed – his only two losses were against heavyweights we moved up to wrestle for the com- petition," said Chargers head coach Ryan McCain, whose team placed third overall. "Southridge had a kid they plugged in who was 12- 1 to Gunnar's 19 -2 record, so they claimed the No. 1 spot." "That really motivated Gunnar," McCain added. "He rolled into the finals and put ( Venegas) away with a first-round pin." Two Pike Central wrestlers placed second – eighth grader Wy- att Frasure, who lost by technical fall by an 18 -0 score to Devon Bell of Heritage Hills in the 140 -pound championship bout; and eighth grader E.J. Willis, who lost by pin to Tecumseh's Chase Jones in the 160 -pound championship bout. Frasure ended the season 21-3 while Willis was 17-5. "Wyatt and E.J. both made it to the finals but, unfortunately, came up short against some really tough kids," McCain said. "They both had fantastic seasons and have very bright futures in high school ahead of them." Four Chargers placed third – sev- enth grader Cole Parks, who won by pin over North Posey's Tyler Gengelbach in the consolation fi- nal for the 110 -pound weight class; eighth grader Kaden Davis, who won by a 10 -3 decision over Gibson Southern's Brock Fauquher in the consolation final for the 117-pound weight class; eighth grader Jon Cannon, who won by pin over Tell City's J.C. Ed Cahill photo By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central High School senior Breyton Booker has been selected for first-team Academic All-State honors for 2018 by the Indiana Bas- ketball Coaches Association. A total of 75 Indiana high school seniors – 36 boys and 39 girls – were chosen as first-team Academic All- State, while 181 more boys and 174 more girls were rec- ognized as honorable men- tion Academic All-State, IBCA executive director Steve Witty announced on Wednesday, March 7. The IBCA Academic All- State team is a program where both academic and athletic prowess are consid- ered in the selections. Items such as grade point average, college board scores and aca- demic class rank are consid- ered along with athletic per- formance in areas such as points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game. "The quality of these stu- dent-athletes shows that suc- cess in academics and suc- cess in athletics are not sep- arate entities," Witty said. "Rather, in many cases, a player's success in the class- room directly contributes to his or her success on the floor." IBCA-member head coaches from schools across the state may nominate their seniors who meet criteria that includes a 3.5 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale, a class rank in the upper 25 percent of one's class, an SAT score of 1,100 (on the reading and math sections) or an ACT score of 24. Booker, a 6 -foot-2 guard, averaged 11.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists during 22 regular-season games. "Breyton is the smartest kid I have ever coached, and has always done very well in school," Chargers head coach Hunter Elliott said. "He is not only a great stu - dent and athlete, but also a great role model. He is great with our youth programs and Charger Cubs, and someone those little kids can really look up to.
