MUNSTER — The Times Media Co. has a new editor, but he's no stranger to Northwest Indiana. Publisher Chris White has promoted Marc Chase to local news editor. Erin Orr will serve as deputy local news editor. Chase previously served as editorial page editor and Orr as managing editor. The moves came during a restructuring of The Times newsroom last week. "I congratulate Marc on this promotion," White said. "During the time I've worked with Marc, he has proved himself a hard-charging leader with his investigative reports and has used his position guiding our opinion page to help shape issues in the Region." Chase also has been a champion of good government and transpar- ency, and that won't change in his new role, White said. "Marc has a real passion for news, but also for Northwest Indiana," White said. He has won numerous awards for investigative reporting, police and courts reporting, political and government reporting and column and editorial writing. "I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to lead one of the most talented news teams I've ever experienced. We look to increase the quality of our content through dogged investigations that both inform and hold our Marc Chase named news editor of The Times, Erin Orr to serve as deputy news editor Chase Orr public officials and leaders accountable," Chase said. White praised Orr for her skill in managing day-to-day operations of the newsroom. Chase described her as "one of the smartest editors" he's ever worked with. Orr said she plans to continue working to give readers the quality news coverage they expect and deserve. "I look forward to working closely with Marc and continuing the strong watchdog and investiga- tive journalism The Times is known for," Orr said. — The Times of Northwest Indiana News in brief IndyStar investigation leads to U.S. House passing sexual abuse legislation WASHINGTON — The House voted 406-3 on Jan. 29 to require amateur athletic govern- ing bodies to promptly report incidents of abuse, a response to a sex abuse scandal in USA Gymnastics uncovered by IndyStar. Backers of the bill hope it will pass the Senate in time to be sent to President Trump for his signature before the Winter Olympics begin Feb. 9. "After a 2016 Indianapolis Star investigation exposed what is now known as the worst sexual abuse scandal in athletics to date, we are taking action to prevent this heinous action from ever taking place again," said Indiana Rep. Susan Brooks, the bill's lead House sponsor. The bill would require adults who interact with amateur athletes to report suspected child abuse, including sexual abuse, within 24 hours to local law enforcement. — USA Today
