It was a time of shame and sadness for all God-fearing people. We discovered the weakness of our will and deficiency of our conscience. It was a time when right and wrong were blended together and every- thing looked gray. We forgot about the ob- ligations we owe to one another. Because right was unpleasant for the moment Amer- ica looked away from truth As our society stumbles along in its spiri- tual decline our only hope is God. The pop- ular enticements of sex, violence, material- ism and self-gratification will only destroy the soul of our beloved America. I am con- vinced that someday history will call this a dark time in American history. In state af- ter state, legislation has been passed that ig- nores God and the traditional family values that made us great. Let us pray for Presi- dent Trump as he works to restore our econ- omy, faith and Americanism. I hope 2018 does not close with a de- caying nation that has forgotten truth, righteousness and moral values. I pray for the day when the values that motivated people to be honest and de- cent will be restored. I pray for a day when people will see that God is more powerful than congressional legislation, world trea- ties or presidential pronouncements. I pray for a day when the culturally elite and liber- al media will understand the importance of truth. I pray for a day when churches will return to the preaching of God's Word and love one another. I pray for a day when polls will not dictate the decision of our govern- ment or our churches. It is an interesting fact that the words "godly" and "godliness" are not found in Paul's writings until we come to the Pasto- ral Epistles, the very epistles that have so much to say about evil days and evil sur- roundings. In the epistles to Timothy, we read about the "perilous times" with which this present dispensation of grace will be brought to a close, while in the letter to Titus we read of "unruly and vain talkers and deceivers," of "liars… evil beasts… lazy gluttons," whom Satan would use to neutralize the work and witness of God's servants. To Timothy and Titus, these young men of God, the Apostle had much to say about godliness, and we must not forget that Paul's words to them are also God's Word to us, be- lievers in Christ, who indeed appear to be living in the closing days of the dispensa- tion of grace, surrounded by a steadily-ris- ing tide of evil and an ever-growing number of wicked, godless men. We do not mean to imply that the Apos- tle does not deal with the various phases of the Christian life in his other epistles, but rather that here in the Pastoral Epistles he wages a sort of campaign for individual god- ly living in the midst of increasing apostasy and godlessness. May God help us, in our character and conduct, to exhibit "the power of godliness," the spiritual power that comes from putting Christ first in all things. Continued on page 2 Well Super Bowl 52 has come and gone. I have told you before, my family just aren't sports enthusiasts, but we usually watch the world series and the super bowl. Many of us watched to see if the disrespect of our an- them and flag would be apparent and when the players were shown during the anthem we saw those shown were paying respect with hands on hearts. Perhaps there were some not showing respect but they were not seen on our tv screens. Thanks to all re- sponsible people who helped this show of honoring our colors. It seemed as though the game was fast paced and evenly matched with both sides poised to take advantage of any slip-ups by their opponents. I have to tell you that I didn't have a favorite team playing. It was enjoyable to see a couple of good teams play what I would call an extremely hard fought but clean game. In the end there was a win- ner and I watched all the action except for the last touchdown because I drifted off to sleep and woke up to an Eagles' victory. I suppose naps happen and as we age they come more easily. For the people who have any of their re- tirement funds in the stock market have been on an exciting ride by some great gains. I don't understand when I read or hear about the ups and downs so I must trust someone else who is paid to know what is going on. I do know that if you are go- ing to be upset with every change the mar- ket makes you will stay upset. So do you in- vest or do you save, listen to your comfort level and do what causes you less stress in your life. We have tried many things at our church in Velpen to build our congregation and it seems as though our efforts haven't met with much success. We have plans on having a work day Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 9:30am We plan on restoring our basement to a more usable condition. Havergal eloquently wrote of giving ourselves completely to God and letting Him use us as a vessel for His purposes and glory. This includes the words we use. The second verse of the hymn reads: "Take my voice, and let me sing Always, on- ly, for my king. Take my lips and let them be Filled with messages from Thee." We must choose our words wisely, be certain we are walking the talk in love, and follow that through with what we are saying. "But no man can tame the tongue.
