Pike Central High School sophomore Lauren Vaughn (30) fires up a three-point shot during IHSA A Girls' Basketball Sec- tional 31 action at Princeton against the host Lady Tigers on Friday, Feb. 2. Ed Ca- hill photo Right: Pike Cen- tral High School se- nior Erika Hendrix- son (middle, with ball) tries to dribble between Princeton ju- nior Keona Lewis (20) and Lady Tiger senior Kiare Young (right) during IHSA A Girls' Basketball Section- al 31 action at Princ- eton on Friday, Feb. 2. Hendrixson scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed 10 re- bounds in the Lady Chargers' 56-52 sea- son-ending loss. Ed Cahill photo sure. But we kept ourselves in it. We didn't play great the first half, but we went in with the lead." Pike Central would extend its lead to as many a three points three t imes in the third quarter – at 25 -22, 27- 24 and 29 -26 – before the La- dy Tigers scored five straight points – on a steal and lay-up by Page and a three-pointer by Page – to reclaim the lead at 31-29 with two minutes left in the third period. A fter Pike Central surged ahead 33-31 on back-to-back baskets by Stone and Crow, a put-back by Sartore and a three-pointer by Sisk pro- pelled the Lady Tigers back into the lead, at 36 -33, with 17 seconds remaining in the quarter. Inbounding the ball with 3.1 seconds left in the third period, the Lady Chargers pulled even at 36 -36 when Croak hit a three-point shot from beyond the midcourt line as the horn sounded. "That was a big shot," Mc- Cutchan said. "That was a momentum builder, I was hoping." However, a three-pointer by Sisk sparked a 9 -1 scoring run at the start of the fourth quarter that gave Princeton a 45 -37 lead with 5:18 remain- ing in the contest. A fter Hendrixson hit a free throw to pull Pike Cen- tral to within 45 -38, a steal and a lay-up by Sisk extend- ed the Lady Tigers' lead to 47-38 with 4:07 left. A free throw by Nalley and a basket by Crow narrowed the deficit to 47-41, but two free throws by Young and a three-point play by Louis gave Princeton its' biggest lead of the game – at 52-41 – with 2:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Lady Chargers, how- ever, refused to give in, an- swering with an 8 -1 scoring run – on two free throws by junior Hailey Marchino and back-to-back baskets and a pair of free throws by Hen- drixson – to close to within 53-49 with 43.3 seconds left. Hendrixson subsequent- ly fouled Page to send her to the free throw line for a one- and-one with 42 seconds re- maining. Page missed the front end of the one-and-one, but was able to grab the rebound and put the ball into the basket, extending Princeton's lead to 55 -49. "We did what we want- ed and got what we wanted, but it didn't work out," Mc- Cutchan said. "We missed the block out. The girl got her own rebound and got a put-back. That was a tough play, and that was nearly a back breaker." Following an exchange of turnovers, Hendrixson would hit a three-pointer to pull the Lady Chargers to within 55 -52 with 22.9 sec- onds left. A fter Sisk hit one of two free throws to extend Princ- eton's lead to 56 -52 with 21 seconds remaining, Pike Central turned the ball over with 8.7 seconds left. Sisk, fouled with 7.8 sec- onds remaining, missed both ends of the double-bonus. Hendrixson grabbed the re- bound of the second miss and subsequently shot – and missed – a three-pointer at the final buzzer. During the fourth period, Pike Central made four of nine field goal attempts – in- cluding just one of five tries from beyond the three-point line – and missed five of 12 free throws. "We just did not execute on offense," McCutchan said. "We missed some shots, missed some free throws, and Princeton hit some shots." "We fell down by 11, but they just don't quit," Mc- Cutchan continued. "They battle. They scrap. To be honest, that's why I've en- joyed this group so much. They just always play hard, no matter the outcome. I just can't be prouder of our group of kids this year." Nalley and Crow pitched in six points each for Pike Cen- tral while Nelson and Stone netted four points apiece. Marchino added two points. For the game, Pike Cen- tral made 17 of 34 field goal attempts – a 50 percent av- erage – and hit 14 of 21 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 21 times. Young paced the Lady Tigers with 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. She also had four steals. Sisk added 16 points. Page netted 11 points while grab- bing a game-high five steals. For the game, Princeton made 20 of 50 field goal at- tempts – a 40 percent aver- age – and hit 13 of 25 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 14 times. The Lady Tigers convert- ed 12 of Pike Central's 21 turnovers into a total of 26 points, while the Lady Char- gers turned six of Prince- ton's 14 turnovers into a to- tal of 13 points. "They put us on our heels with everything that we did," McCutchan said. "We couldn't get ourselves in rhythm to get us on the block as much to rebound. They were forcing us on the perimeter, and we struggled to get into our offense. It was tough." McCutchan, who inter- rupted his postgame inter- view to embrace each of his players as they emerged from the locker room, said that he was already looking forward to next season. "This group built a foun- dation, and now they've built an expectation," McCutchan said. "The kids know what to expect every year. As long as everybody steps up, picks up their game, works on their game in the offseason, we're going to be just fine. I like the kids I have coming back." "Our goal is to win section- al every year," McCutchan continued. "Whether that's realistic or not, that's our number one goal. Like Coach (Trent) Whitehead says, if you can compete every day in practice, you're going to im- prove. I can say this year we have improved. I thought we were a little better than what our record even indicated, but it was a building block for our future. The girls have a lot to be proud of this year, because they gave me every- thing I could ask for." CHARGERS Continued from page 2
