The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, Februar y 7, 2018 B- 3 with a time of 1:02.64 during preliminaries, placed third with a time of 1:01.91 during the sectional finals. "She knew she was better than a second or right at a second better than she was last year after Thursday, so we were hoping that would translate into Saturday, and it all did," Mike Bohnert said. "She did really well. She's about four-tenths of a second or so off of the state standard in the backstroke, so it was a really solid swim." Following both events, Mike Bohnert – as the coach of the first-place finisher – presented his daughter with her first-place ribbons. "It's really neat to coach her all year long and then be able to present her with the ribbon and give her a hug at the end of it," Mike Bohnert said, "because you know how hard she worked all season long." "It was amazing," said Na- talie Bohnert. "I loved going up there after the race and be able to hug my dad and just be really excited with him, because he swims ev- ery race right beside me." As a freshman, Natalie Bohnert became the first La- dy Charger ever to compete in the state meet in an indi- vidual swimming event, plac- ing 30th out of 32 competi- tors during preliminaries in the 100 -yard backstroke. Last year, Natalie Bohnert placed 27th out of 32 compet- itors during preliminaries in the 100 -yard backstroke with a time of 59.74 seconds and 30th out of 32 competi- tors during preliminaries in the 200 -yard individual med- ley with a time of 2:14.80. Going into this year's state meet's preliminaries – which will be held on Friday, Feb. 9, at the Indiana Universi- ty Natatorium on the IU- PUI campus in Indianapolis – Bohnert is seeded 24th in the 100 -yard backstroke and 29th in the 200 -yard individ- ual medley. The top 16 swim- mers in each event advance to Saturday's finals. "I'm hoping to get with- in the 57s on the backstroke and get a chance at the top 16," Natalie Bohnert said. "But it's really about just go- ing out and topping my best." Natalie Bohnert also teamed up with seniors Quin Bailey, Cass Conder and Brittany Young to place second in the 200 -yard in- dividual medley with a sea- son-best time of 2:02.16 – less than one second off the school record of 2:01.34 set by Bohnert, Conder, Young and senior Maya Frederick last year – and fourth in the 400 -yard freestyle with a time of 4:07.92. In addition, freshman Jen- na Meyer and junior Hallee Stephens both advanced to the regional diving meet. Meyer placed second with a season-best 11-dive score of 323.20 points, while Ste- phens tied with Southridge sophomore Evie Sherer for third place with 298.30 points each. The top eight divers at the regional meet – which was held on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Bloomington North – will ad- vance to the state finals on Saturday, Feb. 10. In addition, the team of Frederick-Rice, Keepes, Meyer and freshman Lib- by Stone placed seventh in the 200 -yard freestyle relay with a season-best time of 1:58.43. During preliminar- ies, Frederick-Rice, Keepes, McCrary and Meyer placed sixth with a time of 2:03.21. During Thursday's pre- liminaries: • Frederick-Rice finished 17th in the 100 -yard free- style with a time of 1:06.61. • Stone finished 17th in the 50 -yard freestyle with a season-best time of 30.82. • Freshman Neeley Cor- rell finished 18th in the 100 -yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:31.21. • Cremeans finished 19th in the 100 -yard butterfly with a time of 1:26.24. • Meyer finished 20th in the 100 -yard freestyle with a season-best time of 1:08.28. • Frederick finished 22nd in the 200 -yard freestyle with a season-best time of 2:37.43. • Senior Emillee Halder- man finished 27th in the 100 -yard freestyle with a season-best time of 1:15.67. As a team, Pike Central placed fourth – for the sec- ond straight year – with 244.5 points, trailing Bed- ford North Lawrence (463 points), Jasper (375) and Heritage Hills (373). South- ridge was fifth with 176.5 points, followed by South Spencer (135), Forest Park (112), Tell City (93), Tecum- seh (86), Northeast Dubois (77), Vincennes Lincoln (17) and South Knox (16). "That's about where we figured we'd probably be," Mike Bohnert said of the Lady Chargers' fourth- place finish. "We had solid swims; probably not a lot of best swims, but we had a lot of best swims on Thursday. We wore tech suits on Thurs- day to get to today's meet, so they could get in the right spots. But they swam pret- ty well." Mike Bohnert explained that tech suits are often used by swimmers during a meet's finals rather than the preliminaries. "The tech suits are really thin material; they're really slick," Mike Bohnert said. "They water just sheds off of them. They make for a lot faster swim." "If you know what place you are coming in on Satur- day, you tend to wait so you can get that push on Satur- day," he added. "Otherwise, you may have to wear them on Thursday to get your place set. So they helped a lot." Saturday's meet marked the end of the high school swimming careers of Pike Central's eight seniors – Quin Bailey, Cass Conder, Shania Cremeans, Miki Feld- pausch, Courtney Frederick, Emillee Halderman, Gretch- en McCrary and Brittany Young – all of whom will be missed, Mike Bohnert said. "We had a really good base of seniors that helped all the way through, from sixth grade on up," he said. "Some of them started in fifth grade, and they've do- ne really well, worked real- ly hard, and have been good leaders for the program, and have swam really solid. Cass started out not being able to swim a 25 and now she's in the finals of the breaststroke. So we're pretty pleased."
